No. 12 Keene State Defeats Southern Maine 116- 81

GORHAM, Maine    –   Octavio Brito had 28 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and two steals to lead the No. 12 Keene State College Owls to a 116-81 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.
 
Brito was 11-for-15 from the field, including 4-for-5 from three to lead six Owls in double-digit scoring.  Spencer Aronson had 16 points and six rebounds, while Mason Jean Baptiste added 13 points.  Mitch Shettles had 12 points off of the bench, and Wesley Odiase and Leo Chaikin had 11 and 10 points each respectively.
 
Southern Maine graduate student Bryce Lausier (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) and junior Thomas Whelan (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep) each had 19 points to lead the Huskies. Lausier added six rebounds, while Whelan had five boards.  Sophomore Brady Saunders (Brewer, Maine) tossed in 10 points, and freshman Chris Wall (Toronto, Ontario/IMG Academy) had a season-best nine points off of the bench.

Series History:  Today's game marked the 118th meeting between the No. 12 Keene State College Owls and the University of Southern Maine Huskies. Keene State leads the overall series 72-45, and the Owls have won the last six games consecutively.
 
How It Happened:
  • The Huskies battled the Owls in the opening five minutes of the contest and trailed 19-15 after a pair of free throws from Whelan at the 14:38 mark.  However, after back-to-back threes from Owls Joshua Williams and Brito, KSC grew its lead to 12, 27-15.
  • Southern Maine continued to fight and trailed by six, 34-28, with 9:21 to go in the half following a layup from freshman Aidan Hebert (New Gloucester, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester), but the Owls created separation outscoring the Huskies 19-7 over the next six minutes to lead by 20, 53-35, and took a 60-43 lead into the halftime break. Brito had 18 of his 28 points in the first half for the Owls, while Whelan had 17 of his 19.
  • Keene State started the second half fast, and outscored Southern Maine 21-6, extending its lead to 81-49 with 15:04 to go in the contest. Four different players scored for the Owls in the opening push led by eight points from Baptiste. From there the Owls led by as many as 43 points, 102-59, with just over nine minutes to go to cruise in for the win. 
 
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Keene State shot 47.9 percent (45-for-94) from the field and 39.5 percent (15-for-38) from three in the game.  The Huskies shot well finishing the game shooting 44.4 percent (28-for-63), and 37.5 percent (9-for-24) from three.
  • The Owls outrebounded the Huskies 50-38 and 21-10 on the offensive glass, resulting in a 28-13 disparity in second-chance points. The Owls also benefited from 28 points scored off of Husky turnovers.  USM committed 20 turnovers to KSC's five.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies head to Texas for the Concordia Classic on December 29-30. Southern Maine will face Concorida on the 29th and Ohio Wesleyan on the 30.  The Huskies return to action in January at home versus LEC opponent UMass Boston on Wednesday, January 8 (7:30 pm).
