NCAA Division III Tournament: No. 18 Johns Hopkins Defeats Southern Maine 2-0

EWING, N.J.   -  Katie Sullivan scored the opening goal and the 18th ranked Johns Hopkins University Bluejays scored a goal in each half to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 2-0 in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament Saturday afternoon at Lions Field on the campus of The College of New Jersey.
 
With the loss Southern Maine concludes its outstanding 2024 season with a record of 15-3-3 (7-0-1 Little East) and with the title of 2024 Little East Conference Champion.  The Huskies' departing class of seniors leave the program after helping it to a record of 60-13-10 (24-4-3 Little East) during their four seasons, including back-to-back undefeated seasons in the LEC at 7-0-1 in 2024, and 6-0-2 in 2023.  The Huskies also claimed three consecutive LEC regular season and tournament championships with titles in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Today's game marked the first meeting between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and the Johns Hopkins University Bluejays in women's soccer action.

How It Happened:
  • Sullivan put the Bluejays ahead early with a goal in the ninth minute. Sullivan hit a free kick to the back post past the outstretched save attempt from senior Hunter Stonebraker (Mont Vermon, NH/Souhegan).  Stonebraker finished the game with 11 saves.
  • The Huskies had the first look at goal early in the game as senior Catriona Gould's (Freeport, Maine) in the sixth minute was scooped up by JHU keeper Allyson Shick.
  • The Huskies started aggressively in the second half and senior Ashley Sabatino (Scarborough, Maine) put one on frame in the 46th minute, but again Shick halted the attempt.
  • JHU added an insurance goal in the 61st minute on an offer from Olivia Redden.  From there, USM had a couple more chances, but the Bluejays held for the win.

Inside The Stats:
  • Johns Hopkins led the Huskies in shots on goal 13-2, and led in corners 6-1.
  • Stonebraker's 11 saves are a season and a career high.
