VTSU-Castleton Blanks Southern Maine 2-0

Huskies Conclude 2024 Season

CASTLETON, Vermont  – Toby Ritzkowski converted a penalty kick in the 26th minute to put the VTSU-Castleton Spartans ahead, and Matt Spiller sealed it late in the second to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 2-0 in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Friday night at Dave Wolk Stadium.

Tonight's game marked the 14th meeting between the Huskies and the Spartans. Castleton leads the series 8-3-3. In 2023, the Huskies battled VTSU-Castleton to a 0-0 draw, snapping a three-game skid to the Spartans.

How It Happened
  • The Huskies pressured early earning four corners and firing off three shots in the opening 22 minutes of action.  However, the Spartans struck first after being awarded a penalty kick.  Ritzkowski converted for the Spartans, scoring his third goal of the season for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Huskies put on a pair of shots in the 32nd minute following its fifth corner of the first half, but both attempts from sophomore Jack Brady (Jensen Beach, Fla.) and freshman Martin Kelly (Portland, Maine) were blocked by the Castleton defense.
  • Southern Maine started the second half again pushing forward earning another corner in the opening minutes.  In the 50th, junior Kurtis Voter (Sanford, Maine) put a shot on frame for the Huskies but Spartan goalkeeper Xander Berthiaume came up with the save.
  • Husky freshman goalkeeper Aldo Bryant (Fairhope, Ala./Bayside Academy) made a pair of saves in the 62nd minute to keep the Huskies in the game down by a goal, turning back on target efforts from Ritzkowski and Adolphe Alfani in short order.
  • USM put another shot on target looking for the equalizer in the 75th off of the head of sophomore Liam Conneely (Weymouth, Mass.) but Berthiaume made his third save of the contest. Minute later in the 79th, VTSU-Castleton put the game out of reach as Spiller scored for a 2-0 lead with his fourth goal of the season.
