Southern Maine Romps Past Keene State 7-1

GORHAM, Maine    -  Senior Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine) and freshman Madi Sainis (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Saint Thomas) each scored twice, and freshman Makyla Magid (Golden, Colo./Lakewood) dished out four assists to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 7-1 win over the Keene State College Owls in a Little East Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

Magid's four assists tie a 24-year-old single-game record for assists in a game.  The record is shared by Katie Blanchard '99 (vs. UMass Boston 9-26-98) and Ali Hathaway '00 (vs. Rhode Island College 9-16-00), and now Magid (vs. Keene State 10-19-24).

The Records:
Keene State College (5-9-2, 1-4-1 LEC)
Southern Maine (11-2-2, 6-0 LEC)

Today's game marked the 29th meeting between the University of Southern Maine and the Keene State College Owls.  Keene State leads the overall series 22-5-1; however, the Huskies are 3-0-1 in the last four contests, outscoring the Owls 17-3 in that timeframe.

How It Happened:
  • After a scoreless 25 minutes, Gould scored twice in a five minute span to put the Huskies in front 2-0. Magid assisted on both of Gould's goals, including an outstanding cross to a two-touch volley from Gould in the 31st minute for the second goal of the game.
  • The Huskies scored five more times in the second half.  Senior Kiki Huntress (Kittery Point, Maine/Traip Academy) scored her third goal of the season, taking a laid off ball from Magid and striking from distance to beat the KSC keeper high for a 3-0 lead at the 66th minute.
  • Sainis made it 4-0 with the first of her two goals, tapping in a square ball into the box from junior Bridgette Toland (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown).  Toland created the play, carrying to the endline and beating a defender to lay the ball at the feet of Sainis in the 78th minute.
  • Freshman Meghan Przybilla (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony Village) made it 5-0, scoring her fifth goal of the season with a right-footed shot to the far post in the 84th.  Przybilla benefitted from an outstanding ball over the top from Magid to have a clear shot at goal.
  • Sainis earned the brace in the 86th minute with an unassisted strike for her third goal of the season, before senior Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine) made it 7-0 in less than a minute later. McKenna received a ball in the six from Tolland and slotted it home for her 10th goal of the season.
  • UMass Dartmouth broke up the shutout in the 89th minute.  Katherine Burzlaff scored her fourth goal of the season, hitting a free kick to the far post from distance past the outstretched arms of Husky goalkeeper sophomore Madi Jordan (Essex Junction, Vermont).
