Albert Leads Southern Maine Past Keene State 1-0

Albert's Game Winner is First Goal of His Career

KEENE, N.H.  –  Junior Colin Albert (Gorham, Maine) scored in the 79th minute to break a scoreless draw and lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a key 1-0 win over the Keene State College in a Little East Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon at the Owl Athletic Complex. 
 
The goal is Albert's first of his career, and first of the season.  Freshman goalkeeper Aldo Bryant (Fairhope, Ala./Bayside Academy) made four saves to earn the win, and record the first shutout of his intercollegiate career.

Today's game marked the 62nd meeting between the Keene State College Owls and the University of Southern Maine Huskies.  Keene State leads the overall series 38-17-8.
 
How It Happened
  • With both teams playing with 10 men after red cards were shown on both sides in the 39th minute, the game was scoreless at the half. 
  • Bryant made a pair of saves in the 47th and 69th minute to keep the Huskies level at 0-0 with the Owls. Keene State put another shot on frame in the 78th, but Bryant again came up with the save.  Winning the ball in the midfield after the restart, Albert put in a strong individual effort and finished to the far post to put the Huskies up 1-0. Albert's shot was the first of the second-half for the Huskies.
  • Up 1-0 the Huskies defense was able to see out to the finish of the game.  The Owls had three more shots in the contest, all off-target, and a pair of corners, but Southern Maine stood for the win.

Inside The Stats:
  • Keene State led the Huskies in overall shots 16-5, but had just a 4-2 lead in shots on goal. The Owls also had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
  • With two conference games remaining, the Huskies remain in the hunt for one of six playoff spots.  USM is currently seventh in the standings, one point behind VTSU-Castleton.  The Huskies and Spartans face each other in Vermont on November 2.

Southern Maine and travels to Bowdoin College on Tuesday, October 22 (7:00 pm). The Huskies return to Hannaford Field on Saturday, October 26 (12:00 pm) against WestConn.
