Drinkwater and Tibbetts Score Twice for Huskies

GORHAM, Maine – Senior Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) scored twice in the opening four minutes and the University of Southern Maine Huskies rolled to a 6-1 win over the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

Today's game marked the 43rd game between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs. Southern Maine leads the series 24-17-2.  The Huskies are 6-1 in their last seven contests with the Corsairs, and have won the last three by a combined score of 23-2.  UMD last defeated Southern Maine 2-1 in double overtime in 2021.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Drinkwater put USM up early carrying the ball out wide on the left side of the field before cutting into the circle and hitting a drive to the far post in the third minute.  Drinkwater made it 2-0 quickly, scoring her second goal of the game in the fourth minute with another individual effort.
  • Sophomore Norie Tibbetts (Skowhegan, Maine) put the Huskies ahead 3-0 in the eighth minute redirecting a centering pass from sophomore Dylan Barr (Phippsburg, Maine/Morse) for her ninth goal of the season.
  • Both teams were scoreless in the second quarter and the Huskies carried their 3-0 lead into the break.
  • Tibbetts secured her brace in the 32nd minute to put Southern Maine up 4-0, knocking in a redirected ball from senior Abigail Chartier (Lewiston, Maine).
  • Chartier made it 5-0 in favor of the Huskies in the 49th minute to start the fourth-quarter scoring, and received the assist from Tibbetts.
  • UMass Dartmouth broke up the shutout in the 53rd minute when Sophia Bouffard hustled her way to a loose ball in front of the game to knock in her seventh goal of the season.
  • Senior Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine/Oxford Hills) put the final touches on the game, scoring just seconds after Bouffard to make it 6-1 in favor of the Huskies.  She was assisted by senior Emma Samson (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) on the play.
 
Inside The Statistics:
  • With two goals in today's game, Tibbetts has 10 goals on the season. She has 24 points on 10 goals and four assists to lead the Huskies.  The Huskies' sophomore has 19 goals and seven assists in her career (39 games) for 45 points.
  • Drinkwater's game-winning goal is the 12th of her career. She has 45 goals and 21 assists for 111 points in 77 career games.  Drinkwater is now third in career goals for the Huskies with 45.  The program record of 60 is held by Kristin Potito (1986-88).  Peyton Dostie is in second with 54 (2012-2024).
  • Southern Maine led in shots 27-10 (17-6 on goal) while both teams were even in penalty corners at seven each.
