Today's game marked the 85th meeting between the UMass Boston Beacons and the University of Southern Maine Huskies.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 74-11, and earned a 61-58 win on the road this season (January 3, 2024) to earn its second consecutive win over the Beacons.  The Huskies are 4-1 against UMB in their last five meetings.

How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine started the game on a 5-0 run as Gould hit two free throws and canned a three, but the Beacons rallied to tie the game twice in the first quarter.  Jikiemi-Pearson hit a jumper with 3:31 in the first for a 9-9 score before the Huskies ran off an 8-4 run on threes from sophomores Julia Kratzer (Gorham, Maine) and Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia) and a layup from King for to lead 17-13 headed into the second half.
  • With scoring at a premium in the second quarter, USM scored the first points of the half and led 21-13 with 6:33 until the halftime break following a pair of free throws from Fleming.  After the Fleming free throws, UMB's offense woke up and the Beacons used a 10-3 run to trail the Huskies 24-23 with 2:22 on the clock.  Potter had back-to-back layups in the run, while Sibayla Jensen and Sunny Green each had threes. The Huskies made one of two free throws in the closing moments to hold on to a 25-23 lead at the half.
  • With its best shooting quarter of the game, Southern Maine opened up a 10-point lead, 40-30, outscoring the Beacons 15-7 in the first 5:35 of the third.  Cote stole the ball from the Beacons on the first possession and then scored five straight points on a three and a jumper for a 30-23 lead, while Gould added six points two layups and two free throws.
  • Another three from Cote at the 2:43 mark of the third had the Huskies up 11, 46-35, but the Beacons Jikiemi-Pearson and Sophia Bradbury outscored USM 4-2 to close the quarter and keep UMB within three possessions, 48-39, headed into the fourth.
  • USM snagged its largest lead of the game, 53-41, with 7:23 remaining on a three from Fleming and seemed on its way to a comfortable win, but the Beacons fought their way back with an 11-0 run spanning next five minutes and 20 seconds to trail 53-52 with 2:03 on the clock.  Four different Beacons figured in the run led by four points from Bradbury.
  • With the lead down to a point, USM's Fleming drove baseline on the Huskies next possession and drew the foul, making a pair of free throws for a 55-52 lead. The Huskies defense then took over forcing a five-second violation on UMB's next play. Fleming made a layup with 25 seconds to go for a 57-52 advantage, and the Huskies held from there for the 58-54 final.
