No. 3 Rhode Island College Downs Southern Maine 76-47

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island   - Sophia Guerrier scored a game-high 21 points and had seven rebounds, and five steals to lead the No. 3 Rhode Island College Anchorwomen to a 76-47 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at the Murray Center.
 
Geurrier was 9-for-16 from the field (3-for-6 from three) to lead a balanced offense for RIC.  Izabelle Booth added 12 points, while Madison Medbury had nine points, five steals and three assists.  Angelina Nardolilo had eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.
 
Senior Tara Flanders (Windham, Maine) led USM with 11 points, while senior Tamrah Gould (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) tossed in nine points and two assists.  Sophomore Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia) came off the bench for eight points, four rebounds and two steals, while junior Jade Smedberg (Oxford, Maine/Oxford Hills) had seven points and four rebounds.

Today's game marked the 94th meeting between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and the Rhode Island College Anchormen. Southern Maine leads the overall series 69-24; however, Rhode Island College has won the last 10 games consecutively dating back to the 2019-2020 season, including a 68-27 win earlier this season (December 6).  RIC is the defending Little East Conference Champions, and advanced to the NCAA Division III Final Four in 2023.
 
How It Happened:
  • Rhode Island College shot 8-for-15 in the first quarter (53.3 percent) and jumped out to a 20-6 lead over the Huskies.  Gould scored the first bucket of the game to give USM a 2-0 lead early, but RIC outscored Southern Maine 13-3, led by five points from Booth, over the next four minutes to go up 13-5, before closing the frame on a 7-1 run.
  •  After making just two field goals (2-for-14) in the first quarter, Southern Maine shot 7-for-13 from the field in the second (53.8 percent).  The Huskies outscored RIC 15-11 in the second to trail 31-21 at the half. Gould, Vaughan and Smedberg each had four points to pace Southern Maine.
  • RIC scored the first six points of the third on a three from Medbury, a layup from Jones, and a free throw from Both to lead 37-21 (7:44), but Southern Maine responded with an 11-0 run to trim its deficit to 37-32 with 5:31 remaining in the quarter. The Huskies were 3-for-4 from the field during the run that spanned 2:24 of game time, including 2-for-3 from three.  Liz Cote and Smedberg each canned threes, while Vaughan had a traditional three-point play scoring on an driving layup and converting the free throw.
  • Geurrier stopped the Huskies' run with a layup, and after one of two free throws from USM's Franny Ramsdell for a 39-33 game (3:52), RIC responded with an 11-0 run of its own for a 50-33 lead with just over a minute to play.  Jayda Bing scored five points in the Anchormen run.  USM scored the final four points of the third, highlighted by a three from Flanders, to trail 50-37 at the break.
  • Flanders made two free throws to start the final quarter for USM, but Rhode Island College rattled off nine straight points to lead by 20, 59-39, with 6:26 to play.  From there, RIC led by as many as 30 points for the 76-47 final.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • RIC outrebounded the Huskies 46-36, and had 22 offensive boards.  The Anchorwomen scored 15 of their 76 points on second chance buckets.  RIC won the turnover battled as USM committed 25 turnovers to RIC's 13.  RIC scored 34 points off of USM miscues.
  • Southern Maine finished the game shooting 33.3 percent (15-for-45) from the field. RIC shot 42.0 perent (29-for-69).

Southern Maine travels to Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday, January 27 (1:00 pm).  The Huskies return home on Wednesday, January 31 (5:30 pm) against UMass Boston.
