Southern Maine Clips Monks 2-0

GORHAM, Maine –  Senior Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine/Oxford Hills) scored the game-winning goal in the 50th minute to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-0 win over the Saint Joseph's College (Maine) Monks in a non-conference field hockey game Thursday night at Hannaford Field.

Today's game marked the 26th meeting between the Huskies and the Monks.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 18-8.  Tonight's win over Saint Joseph's is the second consecutive for the Huskies as they earned a 3-1 win over the Monks in 2022 in Standish.  Prior to the 2022 win, SJC had defeated Southern Maine over the last four games.
 
 
How It Happened:
  • Scoring for the third consecutive game, Carson was assisted by freshman Norie Tibbets (Skowhegan, Maine). Tibbets' assist are the first points of her intercollegiate career. 
  • The Huskies added an insurance goal in the 55th minute as freshman Haley-Jane Tuplin (Lisbon, Maine) scored the first goal of her intercollegiate career, rocketing in a shot from the corner for the 2-0 final.
  • The Huskies pressured the entire game and held most of the possession, ringing up 23 shots on goal against the Monks.  Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Kassidy Colllins was outstanding in net for the Monks stopping 18 shots.  Collins was assist by a trio of defensive saves from Hannah Michael (2) and Haley Brooks.
  • Southern Maine goalkeeper Eleanor Folsom (Winthrop, Maine) earned her first shutout of the 2023 season, making five saves, including a pair of stick saves in the fourth quarter from Maya Waryas and Sadie Tirrell.

  • Carson's goal is the 28th of her career, and ranks tied for 12th in USM record books. Tonight's goal was the ninth game-winning goal of her career, making more than 32 percent of her goals, game-winners.
  • Folsom's shutout is the fifth of her career. Folsom had four shutouts in 2022.  She is 7-3 in her career.
  • Southern Maine outshot the Monks 31-9 (23-5) on frame.  The Monks had five of their nine shots in the fourth quarter.  USM also held a distinct advantage in penalty corners at 24-11. 
 
Up Next:
The Huskies are on the road Saturday (2:00 pm) at Framingham State before heading to Bowdoin College on Tuesday (7:00 pm) for a pair of non-conference games.  Bowdoin is currently ranked 14th in the nation by the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association and will be the second nationally-ranked program the Huskies will play in a seven-day stretch.
