Maya Bermudez (West Haven, Conn.) knocked in the game-winning goal in the 70th minute on a ball in from sophomore
Riley Reitchel (Palermo, Maine/Erskine Academy) to lift the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 1-0 win over the Bowdoin College Polars Tuesday evening at Pickard Field.
With the win, Southern Maine remains undefeated on the season at 6-0-1, while Bowdoin is suffering its first loss of the season. The win is the first in program history for the Huskies over the Polar Bears.

Today's game marks the 30
th game in program history between the University of Southern Maine and Bowdoin College, and the first time that the two programs have played since the 2014 season. Tonight's 1-0 victory by the University of Southern Maine is the first in the 30 games series. USM had previously tied Bowdoin 2-2 in double overtime during the 2005 season. It also marks the first time since 2010 that the Huskies have scored on Bowdoin.
How It Happened:
- Atwood was outstanding in goal for the Huskies in the opening half. With Bowdoin outshooting the Huskies 15-3 (5-2 on frame) in the opening 45, Atwood made five of her 10 saves to keep the score level at 0-0.
- Southern Maine gained momentum in the second half, and put a couple of early shots on target before Bermudez broke through for the game-winner with her first intercollegiate goal. Reitchel played a ball into the 18 onto the foot of Bermudez, who hit her shot to the right side for the deciding goal.
- The Polar Bears were awarded a penalty shot with just 23 second remaining in regulation, but the attempt went high and off the post for the final.

- Bermudez's goal is the first of her intercollegiate career, and her first-game winning goal. Twelve different Huskies have goals this season.
- Reitchel's assist is her third of the season, tying her for the team-lead with junior Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine). Nine different Huskies have at least one assist in 2023.
- Atwood's shutout is her second of the season, and second consecutive. The Huskies have outscored their opponents 20-4 this season. Atwood now has 17 career shutouts. Currently second in USM record books, Atwood needs two more shutouts this season to tie the record of 19 held by Husky Hall of Fame member Samantha Whitman (1997-2000).

Southern Maine remains on the road and travels to Little East Conference foe UMass Dartmouth (4:00 pm) on Saturday. The Huskies return home on Wednesday (7:00 pm) in Little East Conference action against Plymouth State University, and then host non-conference opponent UMaine Farmington on Saturday (12:00 pm) before a Sunday (4:00 pm) matchup at Bates College in non-conference action.
