Breanna Atwood (Franklin, Mass.) made a career-high 16 saves while sophomore
Riley Reitchel (Palermo, Maine/Erskine Academy) and senior
Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine) each scored goals as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Colby College Mules 2-1 in a non-conference women's soccer game Tuesday night at Bill Alfond Field.
The win is the first for the Huskies over the Mules since the 2008 season (also a 2-1 score), ending a nine-game losing streak to the Mules.

Today's game marks the 33
rd meeting between the University of Southern Maine and the Colby College Mules. Colby leads the overall series 28-5. The Huskies last faced the Mules on September 27, 2017 – a 6-0 result in favor of Colby. USM last won against the Mules on October 15, 2008, defeating Colby 2-1 in overtime.
How It Happened:
- Atwood made 10 first half saves to keep the score level at 0-0 as Colby had a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
- In the second half, the Huskies pressured early and Reitchel put her team ahead 1-0 in the 50th minute, breaking down the right side of the field after running onto a lofted ball in from the midfield.
- Gould doubled the Huskies' advantage in the 56th minute, taking the ball almost to the endline before beating the Colby keeper to her far post for a 2-0 score.
- Atwood continued her strong play in net for the Huskies, making a pair of big saves, before Colby's Pepper Joseph cut the Mule disadvantage to 2-1 in the 78th minute. However, Atwood and the Huskies' defense were able to see it through for the win

- Reitchel's goal is the fifth of her career and second of the 2023 season.
- Gould now has three goals on the season, bringing her career total to 32 goals. It is her second game-winning goal of the season. Eleven of Gould's 32 goals have gone for game-winners in her 42-game career. She is second in career goal behind all-time leading scorer Ciera Berthiaume's 43 career goals.
- Atwood is now 30-8-3 in her career as a Husky. Her 16 saves in today's win are a career-high, and give her 207 saves in her career. She is 12th in career saves.
