GORHAM, Maine – Wil McCarthy was 3-for-7 over two game with three RBI to lead the No. 25 Salve Regina to a pair of wins over the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 2-1, 6-4, in a non-conference baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at
Ed Flaherty Field. Both games were seven inning games.
Southern Maine is set for the 2023 Little East Conference Baseball Championship which will be hosted by Rhode Island College May 10-13. Rhode Island College is the number one seed and 2023 LEC Regular Season Champion. With its conference record of 12-4, Southern Maine is the No. 3 seed for the tournament. The Huskies will face UMass Boston at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, May 10 in their first game.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. Salve Regina Game 1:
- Salve Regina scored a run in the fourth and the sixth to get past an early 1-0 deficit to earn a 2-1 win in the opener.
- Southern Maine senior Jason Komulainen (Gorham, Maine) gave the Huskies the lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI double to the gap in left. Senior Tom Vesosky (Colchester, Vermont) led off the inning with a single up the middle and the scored on Komulainen's double.
- The Seahawks tied the game up in the top of the fourth on an RBI single up the middle from Wil McCarthy. McCarthy drove in Christian Homa who reached on a one-out double to left.
- Homa drove the eventual game-winner with an RBI sacrifice fly to left in the top of the sixth. Matt D'Amato started the sixth for the Seahawks with a lead-off double down the right field line, and advance to third on a fly out from Tyler Cannoe.
- Southern Maine threatened in the bottom of the seventh with runners on third and first after a hit-by-pitch and an infield single from Vesosky, but USM freshman Kyle Douin's (Augusta, Maine/Cony) drive to center was caught on a spectacular diving play from Brandon Grover.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. Salve Regina - Game 2:
- Salve Regina scored three runs in the top of the fourth to snap a 2-2 tie and hold for the game two win and sweep of Southern Maine. The Seahawks used three hits and took advantage of two Husky errors to score three runs. Brandon Grover had an RBI bunt single to plate the go-ahead run, and McCarthy made it 4-2 with an RBI single to right. Dustin Siqueira made it 5-3 with an RBI sacrifice fly.
- The Seahawks added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as McCarthy laced an RBI an RBI triple scoring Grover for a 6-2 lead. McCarthy nearly made it 7-2 attempting to take home on a ball that got away from the Huskies' catcher, but USM reliever junior Lucas Francis (Lisbon, Maine) made an athletic play to catch the relay and apply the tag to send the game to the bottom of the inning.
- The Huskies fought in the seventh making it 6-4. Douin drew a two-out walk and Komulainen launched a two-run home run to the game in left center. With the tying run on deck, Salve reliever Kyle Carozza got the strikeout to end the side.
- Salve Regina led 2-0 after the second thanks to a two-run triple from Michael Breen; however, the Huskies tied the game up in the bottom of the third following a two-run home run from junior Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy). Seymour drove in Komulainen who reached safely with a two-out single to right.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Seymour's two-run home run in game two is his team-leading eighth of 2023 and 29th of his career. Seymour is now tied for second in USM career records for home runs with Hall of Famers Vinnie Degifico (1984-1987) and Jason Crepeau (1995-1998). The record (32) is held by Pete Misiaszek (1991-1994).
