Southern Maine Holds Off Plymouth State 8-7

GORHAM, Maine.  – Freshman Kyle Douin (August, Maine/Cony) knocked a three-run home run to right field in the third to highlight a 12-hit attack, and junior Matt Burnett (Ellworth, Maine) struck out four in 1.1 innings of work to earn the save as the University of Southern Maine Huskies held off the Plymouth State University Panthers 8-7 in a Little East Conference baseball game Monday afternoon at Ed Flaherty Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Down 1-0 after the top of the first, Southern Maine jumped ahead of the Panthers 5-1 by the bottom of the third.  Senior Brogan Searle-Belanger (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) doubled in the game-tying run in the second with a gap shot to right field, before Pike put USM up 2-1 with a single to center to score Searle-Belanger.
  • Douin's fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the third gave the Huskies their comfortable 5-1 margin. Vesosky started the rally with a one-out single up the middle before senior Jason Komulainen (Gorham, Maine) made it runners on first and third with two outs on a single into right.  Douin drove them all in with a shot over the right field fence for his team leading 27, 28 and 29th RBI of the season.
  • The Panthers made it 5-2 in the top of the fourth on back-to-back singles from Chris Faherty and Scotter Summa and an RBI ground out from Alex Rives, but USM returned to its four-run advantage in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI ground out from junior Janek Luksza (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills).  Senior Jonathan Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) stroked a one-out double to left and moved up to third on a single from sophomore Anthony Poole (South Portland, Maine) before Luksza got enough out of his at bat to put the Huskies ahead 6-2.
  • In the top of the fifth, the first three Panthers reached safely on a lead-off walk, and a single through the right side before Sam Malgeri connected on an RBI double for a 6-3 score.  However, the Huskies responded again as junior Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to right field and a 7-3 lead.
  • PSU continued to fight and tied the score up at 7-7 in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of a pair of Husky errors and five hits for four runs.  After one out, Rives reached on an error and the bases were loaded following singles from Jackson Curtis and Luke Solkolski.  With one out, Panther Bryan McGrath connected on his first home run of the season, clearing the left field fence for four RBI and giving PSU a new life in the game.
  • With his team's lead erased, Southern Maine's Pike led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple to the gap in right to give the Huskies an immediate runner in scoring position.  Wilson delivered in USM's next at bat with a bounding grounder to short stop for the RBI and an 8-7 USM lead.
  • PSU threatened in the top of the seventh with a runner on second, but Husky reliever graduate student Owen Sullivan (Biddeford, Maine) entered the game to get the final out of the seventh. After a quite home half of the inning, Sullivan retired the first two batters he faced in the eight via strikeout before Burnett entered to get the final out, getting the Panther batter swinging.
  • In the ninth, Burnett continued a dominant performance, bouncing back from a lead-off single up the middle to get the final three batters on strikeouts – all swinging – for his second save of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Seymour's home run is his seventh of the season, and 27th of his career, putting him into a three-way tie for fourth in the Huskies' career record books with Forrest Chadwick (2011-2014) and Dylan Hapworth (2017-2021). USM's career mark for home runs is 32 set by Pete Misiaszek (1991-1994).
  • Sullivan and Burnett combined for six strikeouts in 2.1 innings in an outstanding combined performance in relief.
