Shanks Reaches 200 Career Points in 20-12 Win Over Corsairs

DARTMOUTH, Mass – Rachel Shanks (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) became the third player in University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse history to reach 200 career points with a nine-point effort in the Huskies' 20-12 win over UMass Dartmouth on Friday night.

The Goalies: 
USM: Cece Racine (Lewiston, Maine): 7-5, win, seven goals allowed
USM: Lydia Laslavic (Thomaston, Maine/Oceanside): one saves, five goals allowed, .167 save percentage
UMD: Payton Conceicao: 7-4, four saves, 20 goals allowed, .167 save percentage
 
How It Happened:
  • Shanks scored the first two goals of the game with assists coming from junior Kiaya Gatchell (Portland, Maine/Deering) both times as part of a 4-0 run to open the game.
  • The Corsairs countered with three goals to cut the lead to 4-3 with just under four and a half minutes left in the quarter. Melanny Sanchez Alvarez scored two of the UMass Dartmouth goals.
  • The teams then traded goals before Shanks scored two goals in the final two minutes to give Southern Maine a 7-4 lead after one quarter.
  • Sophomore Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine) scored twice as part a 5-3 second quarter for the Huskies.
  • UMass Dartmouth outscored Southern Maine 3-2 in the third but could not keep pace with the Huskies who added six more goals in the final quarter.
  • Freshman Maddie Kinney (Topsham, Maine/ Mt. Ararat) and Shanks each scored twice in the fourth and Kinney assisted on Shanks' final goal.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Shanks scored eight goals and had an assist for nine total points. Her eight goals are tied for the third-most in a game in program history and her nine points tie for ninth.
  • With her outstanding offensive performance Shanks has reached 200 career points. She is the third Husky to reach the milestone joining Jessica Knight (248) and Aliza Jordan (225).
  • Kinney and McKenna each scored four goals. Kinney assisted on two goals while McKenna had one assist.
  • McKenna also recorded 11 draw controls and went 2-for-2 on free position shots.
  • Gatchell recorded three assists and junior Jillian Nichols (Gorham, Maine) also had three points from two goals and an assist.
  • Sophomore Anna Byers (Milford, Ct./ Joseph A. Foran), freshman Molly Black (Windham, Maine) and junior Paige Rinaldi (Freeport, Maine) also had points for USM with Byers and Rinaldi scoring goals and Black logging an assist.
  • Sanchez Alvarez led UMass Dartmouth with four points (three goals and an assist) followed by Natalia Agrelo, Widline Thomas and Maddie Wright with three. Agrelo and Wright each scored three goals while Thomas netted two goals and had an assist.
  • Hannah Mitus had a goal and an assist for the Corsairs.
  • Senior Maeve McGarrity (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) and Shanks each caused two turnovers.
