Huskies Rout Beavers 19-2

GORHAM, Maine – Nine different players scored goals for the University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse team on Tuesday evening as the Huskies put on an offensive clinic in a 19-2 win over the Beavers of UMaine Farmington. Leading the way for the Huskies was graduate student Rachel Shanks (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) with six goals and an assist. Freshman Maddie Kinney (Topsham, Maine/ Mt. Ararat) also had a strong showing with three assists and a pair of goals.
 
When and Where: March 21, 2023 – Gorham, Maine – Hannaford Field
 
The Records: Southern Maine: 2-5, UMaine Farmington: 0-3
 
The Goalies: 
USM: Cece Racine (Lewiston, Maine): 2-4, zero goals allowed.
USM: Lydia Laslavic (Thomaston, Maine/Oceanside): one save, two goals allowed, .333 save percentage.
UMF: Kate Nowell: 0-2, seven saves, 19 goals allowed, .269 save percentage
 
How It Happened:
  • Freshman Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) kicked off the scoring just 13 seconds into game by collecting the ball on the draw control and racing down to field before ripping a shot past the UMF goalie.
  • The next Husky goal went to sophomore Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine) on a free position shot just 50 seconds later.
  • The Huskies went on to score five more times in the first 15 minutes of action with Hill netting her second goal of the quarter, Shanks scoring three times and sophomore Emily Cloutier (Brunswick, Maine) scoring as well. Four of seven goals in the quarter came on free position shots.
  • In the second quarter the Huskies ripped off another seven goals thanks to another three from Shanks, two from Kinney and one apiece by Cloutier and junior Kiaya Gatchell (Portland, Maine/Deering).
  • The Beavers finally broke the shutout with an Emma Bourget goal just under four minutes into the third quarter but the Huskies scored three times in the frame with junior Ella Nason (Wells, Maine/Noble) and freshman Elaina Hanselmann (Sanford, Maine) each scoring for their time in their Southern Maine careers. McKenna also scored in the closing seconds of the quarter.
  • Bourget scored her second goal of the game early in the fourth quarter for the Beavers.
  • Racine, who had been replaced in goal by Laslavic at the half, saw action in the field in the fourth quarter and scored the first two goals of her career.
Inside The Stats:
  • The Huskies had nine different players score goals with Shanks leading the way with six and Kinney, Cloutier, Hill, McKenna and Racine each scoring twice.
  • Freshman Molly Black (Windham, Maine) also recorded an assist.
  • Southern Maine nearly doubled the draw control total by Beavers at 15-8. McKenna recorded six draw controls for the Huskies.
  • Hill collected five ground balls for the Huskies and caused four turnovers. The Huskies played spectacular defense throughout the contest and forced 20 turnovers while allowing just eight shots by UMF.
 
Up Next: The Huskies will hit the road to face Worcester State on Friday at 4PM in Worcester.
