Asare & Hawes Earn Post-Season Honors From MMWBCA

GORHAM, Maine – Senior Cody Hawes (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) and freshman Mark Asare Jr (Roswell, Ga./Centennial) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's basketball team have each earned post season honors from the Maine Men's Basketball Coaches & Writers Association. Hawes was named second team all-state, while Asare was named to the all-rookie team. 
 
Recently named to the 2022-2023 All- Little East Conference First Team, Hawes finished the season as the Huskies second leading scorer and top rebounder, averaing 11.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game.  Scoring in double-figures in 13 games, and establishing a new career-high of 28 points in an 89-76 win over Rhode Island College (January 25, 2023), Hawes shot an outstanding 55.3 percent from the field (109-for-197), 34.1 percent (14-for-41) from three-point range, and 71.8 percent (51-for-71) from the free throw line.  He finishes his 80-game career with 687 points, 456 rebounds, 240 assists, 92 steals and 26 blocked shots. 
 
Named MMWBCA Rookie of the Week four times during the season, Asare averaged 7.6 points per game while appearing in 25 games in his first season. Averaging just under 20 minutes per game, Asare shot 41.6 percent (32-for-77) from three-point range, and averaged 2.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game. Scoring in double-figures in seven contests during the season, Asare scored a career-best 16 points in an 86-77 win over UMaine Farmington, shooting 5-for-8 from the field and 4-for-6 from the three-point line. 
 
Southern Maine finished the 2022-2023 season with an overall record of 16-10 and 10-6 in the Little East.  Ending the regular season in third in the LEC, Southern Maine's 10 conference wins were the most in a season since the 1989 season.
