Southern Maine Drops Plymouth State 75-62

PLYMOUTH, NH  –  Junior Chance Dixon (Lake Worth, Fla./Santaluces) scored 16 points to lead three players in double figures as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Plymouth State University Panthers 75-62 in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Hill Gymnasium. 
 
Dixon was 6-for-13 from the field, including 4-of-9 from three, adding five rebounds.  Freshman Diego Colon (New Braunfels, Texas) added 13 points, seven rebounds, and two steals off of the bench, while senior Jason Lombard (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak) tossed in 12 points, to go with five rebounds. Senior Cody Hawes added eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
 
With the win, Southern Maine has its most wins in LEC play since the 2015-2016 season when the Huskies earned nine wins in conference.  USM previously has had eight wins during the 2007-08 and the 2012-13 season.  Southern Maine has won four straight.
 
Kyler Bosse had a game-high 18 points to lead PSU, while Tyson Thomas added 13 points, five rebounds and six steals.  Elijah Swanson added eight points, nine rebounds and three assists.

Series History:
Meeting for the 150th time in series history, Southern Maine trails Plymouth State 71-79 all-time.  The Huskies have won the last three over the Panthers, including a 67-52 win at home earlier this season.
 
How It Happened:
  • Narrowly ahead 22-21with 5:33 left in the first half, Southern Maine closed out the first on a 15-8 run to take a 37-29 lead at the break.  Colon scored six of his 13 points in the spurt, including a buzzer beating three to end the half.
  • USM started the second as it ended the first, opening with a 9-2 run, to lead 46-31 after the first five minutes of the second frame was done.  Four different players scored for the Huskies in the opening minutes, including a three from Dixon. 
  • A three from PSU's Bosse had the Panthers within 12, 51-39, at the 10:16 mark, but the Huskies quickly grew their lead to 20, 60-40, at the 7:37 mark with a 9-1 run capped by a layup from Colon. 
  • Five points from Thomas and two from Bosse made a 7-0 Panther run to bring PSU back to within 12, 65-53, with 2:28 left in the game, but it was as close as the Panthers would get.  USM led 75-59 late before a last second three from PSU's Maxwell Galbraith made it the 75-62 final.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Led by 13 points from Colon, USM's bench outscored the Panthers' bench 26-19. 
  • The Huskies shot 48.1 percent (26-for-54) from the field and 36.0 percent (9-for-25) from three.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies are on the road for their next two games – all in Little East Conference play – traveling to Eastern Connecticut (Feb. 11) and UMass Boston (Feb. 15).
