GORHAM, Maine  -   Freshman guard/forward Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia/King's Edge Hill Academy) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's basketball team has been selected to the 2022-2023 Maine Women's Basketball Coaches' Association (MWBCA) All-Rookie team. 
 
Vaughan, who earned MWBCA Rookie of the Week honors four times during the season, is the first Huskies' women's basketball player to earn All-Rookie team honors since Victoria Harris (Altus, Okla/Lewiston) was selected following the 2018-2019 season.
 
Vaughan had a standout first season for Southern Maine averaging 10.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game. As the Huskies' second-leading scorer, Vaughan shot a team-best 41.6 percent (84-for-202) from the field, and was solid from three-point range 30.3 percent (10-for-33) and the free throw line 72.1 percent (80-for-111) – good for third and fourth respectively on the team. Vaughan's steals ranked second on the team, while her rebounding and assists were fourth. Vaughan was second on the team in blocked shots with 21.
 
Against Little East Conference opponents, Vaughan averaged 10.0 points and 3.3 rebounds per game while shooting 42.9 percent from the floor, 38.9 percent from three, and 75.8 percent from the free throw line. 
 
"Vanessa had an outstanding first year of intercollegiate basketball," noted Southern Maine Head Coach Samantha Norris.  "Her ability to take the ball to the basket and to finish made an immediate impact.  She has tremendous potential and I expect her to continue to play a significant role in the success of Huskies' women's basketball."
 
In addition to her four weekly citations from MWBCA, Vaughan earned Little East Conference Rookie of the Week honors four times, and was selected as the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Rookie of the Week once.  During the Huskies' tournament trip to Las Vegas to compete in the D3hoops.com Classic, Vaughan earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
 
Picked to finish seventh in the 2022-23 Little East Conference preseason poll, the Huskies finished fifth earning a spot in the LEC post-season tournament.
