GORHAM, Maine – Kaylee Beyor scored 14 points to lead four players in double-figures as the University of New England Nor'easters defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 65-53 in opening game of the 2023-2024 women's basketball season Wednesday night at Hill Gymnasium.
Beyor was 6-for-11 from the field as the Nor'easters shot a solid 51.0 percent (26-for-51) from the field in the game. Jordyn Franzen, Sydney Jenisch and Juliana Tracey each scored 13 points for UNE. Tracey had a team-high 7 rebounds and six assists to highlight UNE.

Liz Cote (Conway, NH/Kennett),
Tara Flanders ( Windham, Maine) and
Tamrah Gould (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) each scored 12 points to pace Southern Maine. Junior
Jade Smedberg (Oxford, Maine/Oxford Hills) had a game-high nine rebounds., while Gould had four assists, and Flanders added seven boards and three steals.

Today's game marked the 53
rd meeting between the University of New England and the University of Southern Maine. The Huskies lead the overall series 39-14, but UNE has won the last two games consecutively.
How It Happened:
- Both teams were tied at 13 to end the first quarter with Flanders scoring six of her 12 points in the opening frame.
- UNE took control of the game with a big second quarter, outscoring USM 20-7 to lead 33-20 at the break. Jenisch had 11 of her 13 points in the second, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field.
- The Huskies struggled to hit the basket in the second quarter, going 3-for-15 from the field and committing four turnovers. Sophomore Emma Haskell (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) led the Huskies with three points.
- The third quarter produced a more even game with UNE outscoring the Huskies 16-12. Franzen led the way with eight for the Nor'easters, shooting 4-for-4 from the field. Gould and Cote combined for nine of the Huskies' 12 points in the third, but the Huskies were again cold from the floor shooting 5-for-19 (26.3 percent).
- The Huskies outscored UNE 21-16 in the fourth, but it was not enough as UNE held for the 12-point win. Cote was 3-for-3 from the floor, including a pair of triples for eight points in the fourth, while Gould added five points. The Huskies shot 44.4 percent (8-for-18) in the fourth, including a 3-for-9 effort from three-point range.

- Southern Maine had 19 more possessions than the Nor'easters winning the turnover battled 21-15, and snagging 16 offensive boards, but shot just 28.6 percent (20-for-70) from the field. Smedberg had four offensive rebounds, while Haskell snagged three.
Up Next:
Southern Maine hosts Husson University on Wednesday, November 15 (5:30 pm) in its next contest. The Huskies will then take part in the Bowdoin Coastal Classic. USM faces Whittier College on Friday, November 17 (7:30 pm) and then Bridgewater State University on Saturday, November 18 (2:30 pm).
