CASTLETON, Vt. – Freshman
Cassidy Weiher ((Aurora, Colo./ Cherokee Trail) recorded 77 kills over two matches for the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's volleyball team on Saturday in a tri-match hosted by Vermont State University Castleton. The Huskies won in straight sets in both of their matches defeating the hosts and Fisher College. Weiher came up just short of the program record of 40 assists in a three-set match twice with 38 in the first match and 39 in the second.
Game One
The Records:
Southern Maine: 6-20 (1-7 LEC)
VTSU Castleton: 6-16 (0-8 LEC)
Series History:
Southern Maine has played Castleton nine times and is undefeated in those nine matches.
How It Happened:
- Weiher kicked off the day with aces on the first two serves of the game. The Huskies took the first set 25-20 and hit .364 with 18 kills. Senior Brianna Delloiacono (Moodus, Conn./ Nathan Hale-Ray) registered seven kills in the set.
- The second set also ended 25-20 and Delloiacono added another seven kills.
- Southern Maine won the third set 25-16 with junior Madison Zimmer (Regina, Saskatchewan/Dr. Martin LeBoldus Catholic) recording four kills.
Inside The Stats:
- Weiher's 38 kills are tied for the fourth-most in program history for a three-set match.
- Delloiacono led all players in kills (17) and aces (three).
- Zimmer finished with a career-high 12 kills.
- Senior Sierra Castonguay (Nottingham, N.H./Dover) had 17 digs to finish one ahead of Castleton's Hailey Martinovich for the game-lead. Martinovich also led Castleton in kills with 11.
- Southern Maine had 15 aces with Weiher, Delloiacono, Zimmer and junior Isabella Smith (Merrimack, N.H.) each notching three.
Game Two
The Records:
Southern Maine: 7-20
Fisher: 10-23
Series History:
Fisher and Southern Maine have now played three times with two of those matches coming this week. The Huskies defeated the Falcons 3-1 on Wednesday night in Gorham.
How It Happened:
- Fisher scored the first two points of the first set but the Huskies put together a 7-0 run to gain momentum and went on to win the set 25-12. The Huskies recorded 16 kills in the set with seven coming from sophomore captain Drew Johnson (Pismo Beach, Cali. /Brewer). The Huskies made just two attack errors and hit .519.
- In the second set Southern Maine was down 18-11 but rallied for nine-straight points to take the lead. The Falcons tied the set at 20-20 but the Huskies closed out the stanza with a 5-0 run. Delloiacono recorded six of the Huskies' 16 kills in the set and freshman Darrien Pugsley (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) had five.
- The Falcons led by as many as 10 points in the third set but the Huskies chipped away at the lead and pulled out a 26-24 win to sweep the match. Delloiacono once again set the tone for Southern Maine with eight kills in the third set.
Inside The Stats:
- Southern Maine set a new program record for kills in a three-set match with 49. The previous mark was 48 set against Bridgewater State on October 15, 2016.
- Delloiacono led the Huskies in kills with 16 followed by Johnson with 11 and Zimmer and Pugsley with seven.
- Weiher recorded 39 assists in the match which ties for the second-most in a three-set match in USM history.
- Two Huskies, Castonguay and Delloiacono, each had double-digit dig totals. Castonguay had 18 and Delloiacono logged 10.
- Alicia Tkach had seven kills to lead Fisher.
- Edsyl Irizarry recorded 15 digs.
