Will Smith (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional), junior
Vincent Anderson (Anchorage, Alaska/A.J. Dimond) and sophomore
Asa Farley (Gorham, Maine) of University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's soccer team have each earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors.
Members of the Huskies' formidable defense, all three Husky student-athletes are earning the honor after distinguishing themselves athletically and academically at the University of Southern Maine. To be eligible for the accolade, student-athletes must be a starter or an important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), must have participated in at least 90 percent of the team's games, must be at least a sophomore academically and have been at their current institution for one full academic year. Graduate students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher as both an undergrad and graduate student-athlete. Student-athletes are nominated for the honor by their institution's Athletic Communications professionals.
A 2022 All-Little East Conference first team selection at defense, Smith is a two-time William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Playing in 18 of the Huskies' 19 games and starting 17, Smith had three goals and three assists from his position as outside back. Smith had a pair of goals in the Huskies' 3-2 win over UMass Dartmouth in Little East Conference action, and helped Southern Maine return to the conference playoffs for the first time since 2018. Smith has played in 51 career games for the Huskies and has three goals and seven assists for 13 points. Smith is studying Psychology.
Playing and starting in 18 games, Anderson had the Huskies' second-most minutes played during the season and helped USM to four shut outs. A center back, Anderson has played in 35 career games with the Huskies, starting 35, and during that time the Huskies have had 14 shutouts. A William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete, Anderson is studying Sports Management.
Moving into a starting role as a sophomore, Farley played and started all 19 of the Huskies' games while playing the most minutes on the 2023 squad. Farley played full 90s in 15 of the Huskies' 19 games, including a stretch of 11 games to close out the regular season, including the Huskies' playoff clinching 0-0 draw against Vermont State University Castleton in the last regular season game of the season. An Health Science major, Farley will be recognized as a William B. Wise Scholar Athlete later this academic year.
Designated Academic All-District student-athlete honorees are eligible for selection to the Academic All-America program. College Sports Communicators began the distinguished Academic All-America® program in 1952, and since then, has honored more than 38,000 deserving student-athletes from numerous sports across all divisions with these elite Academic All-America® scholar-athlete honors. Currently, CSC sponsors Academic All-America® programs for men's soccer, women's soccer, football, volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, baseball, softball and men's and women's track and field/cross country. Many other sports are eligible through the At-Large program, including USM sponsored sports field hockey, golf, ice hockey, and wrestling).
