Southern Maine Defeats Castleton 5-2; Finishes LEC Regular Season Undefeated at 6-0-2

Huskies' Host A Little East Conference Championship Semifinal Game on Thursday (TBA)

 CASTLETON, Vermont   -  Sophomore Riley Reitchel (Palermo, Maine/Erskine Academy) had two goals and an assist as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Vermont State University-Castleton Spartans 5-2 in a Little East Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Dave Wolk Stadium.
 
With the win, Southern Maine concludes the 2023 regular season undefeated in the Little East Conference at 6-0-2.  The Huskies are the 2023 Little East Conference Regular Season Champions and top seed in the upcoming LEC Championship Tournament.

Today's game marked the sixth meeting between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and VTSU-Castleton Spartans.  The Huskies have won the last three consecutively and lead the overall series 4-2.  Southern Maine last played Castleton in the semifinals of the 2022 LEC Tournament and earne d a 2-0 win.
 
 
How It Happened:
  • Senior Eliza Roy (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills) scored the first goal of the game in the ninth minute off of an assist from Reitchel, and sophomore Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy).  Despite outshooting the Spartans 14-0 in the opening half, the score remained 1-0 through the first 45.  Castleton goalkeeper Emma Ezzo made six first half saves.  
  • Sophomore Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) doubled the lead in the 56th minute, scoring an unassisted goal. 
  • Castleton cut the deficit in half in the 67th minute when Maggie McKearnin scored on an unassisted strike.
  • Reitchel scored her first goal of the game in the 87th minute to make it 3-1. However, Castleton quickly countered in the 88th minute, making it 3-2 on McKearin's second goal of the game.
  • With regulation nearing, the Huskies scored two more goal in short order for the 5-2 final.  Junior Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine) scored her eighth goal of the season on a feed from Roy in the 89th minute, before Rietchel put the exclamation point on the game in the 90th minute on a feed from McKenna for her seventh goal of the season.

  • Reitchel's assist is her team-leading ninth of 2023.  The Huskies' sophomore has seven goals and nine assists for 23 points this season.  The assist is Reitchel's 11th of her career.
  • McKenna's goal and assist in today's game gives her eight goals and seven assists this season for 23 points.  She has 20 goals and nine assists in her career for 28 points.
  • Atwood's win is the 39th of her career. She is 39-9-6 overall.
 
Up Next:
The 2023 Little East Conference Championship Tournament begins on Tuesday, October 31.  As the 2023 Regular Season Champion USM is the top seed and will have a bye and host a semifinal game on November 2 (time and opponent TBA).
