Southern Maine Stumbles at UMass Dartmouth 78-65

Fleming, Vaughan Set Scoring Career Highs; Aceto Sets Rebounding Career Mark

Box Score NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass.  – University of Southern Maine Huskies' junior Amy Fleming (Berwick, Maine/Noble) and freshman Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia/King's Edge Hill) each set career-high marks in scoring but it was not enough to overcome an ice-cold first quarter in a 78-65 loss to UMass Dartmouth Corsairs in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Tripp gymnasium.

Vaughan scored a game-high 23 points on 9-for-15 shooting, adding seven rebounds, two blocked shots, two assists and a steal.  Fleming added a career-best 19 points, knocking down 3-of-7 from three and going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.  Junior Tamrah Gould (Manchester, N.H.) added 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists, while junior Ashlee Aceto (South Portland, Maine) snagged a career-best 12 rebounds for game-high honors. Series History:
Today's game was the 82nd contest between Southern Maine and UMass Dartmouth.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 66-15; however, including today's win, UMD has won the last eight.

How It Happened:
  • The Corsairs jumped out to a large lead after the first quarter, 26-7, as the Huskies struggled to convert offensively making just 3-of-14 from the field, and turning the ball over seven times.  Conversely, UMD was 11-for-18 from the floor shooting a red-hot 61.8 percent from the field.
  • Southern Maine regained its footing in the second quarter outscoring UMD 22-12 and making it a nine-point game, 38-29, at the half. Vaughan had eight of her 23 in the second quarter, while Fleming had seven.
  • In the third, UMD's Moretti scored nine of her team-high 17 points to keep the Corsairs in front 59-45 at the break.
  • The Huskies strung together a 9-3 run to open the first 2:24 of the fourth quarter, going 3-for-4 (1-for-1 from three) from the field, to pull to within eight of the Corsairs 62-54. But it was as close as USM would get the rest of the way as the Corsairs got enough from the free throw line and its offense for the win.

Inside The Stats:
  • Led by 12 rebounds from Aceto, USM outrebounded the Corsairs 42-37, snagging 11 offensive rebounds.
  • Both teams combined for 45 turnovers.  UMD scored 23 points off of 25 Husky turnovers, while USM scored 16 off of 20 Corsair miscues.
