Colby Dexter (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) laced a two-out three-run double in the bottom of the eighth to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 9-5 win over the Castleton University Spartans in game two of a Little East Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at
Ed Flaherty Field. Southern Maine fell to Castleton 13-6 in the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Castleton 13, Southern Maine 6
- Castleton combined for 15 hits off of four Husky pitchers to earn a 13-6 win in game one. The Spartans scored seven unanswered runs over the top of the eighth and ninth innings to break open an 6-5 game. Reece De castro was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI, including a home run to highlight the Spartans. Evan Keegan drove in four runs on a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.
- After a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh from USM's Tom Vesosky (Colchester, Vermont) pulled the Huskies to within a run of Castleton, the Spartans' used a two-run home run from De castro to lead 8-5.
- USM threatened for runs in the bottom of the eighth as freshman Zach Mooers (Winchester, N.H./Keene) and sophomore Janek Luksza (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) drew walks to start the inning and moved up to third and second on a ground out. However, CU reliever Matt Olmstead was able to get out of the jam with a infield fly and a ground out.
- In the top of the ninth, the Spartans erupted for five runs on six hits. Ryan Lawrence, Kannon Dush, Tyler McLain each had an RBI in the inning, while Evan Keegan drove in a pair of runs with a double to center for a 13-5 lead.
- In the home half of the ninth, Husky sophomore Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) had a solo home run to center for the 13-6 final.
HOW IT HAPPENED: USM 9, Castleton 5
- Southern Maine scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to break open a 5-5 tie game to earn a 9-5 win in the second game of its LEC doubleheader with Castleton.
- Senior Jason Komulainen (Gorham, Maine) and junior Arlo Pike (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) started the eighth with back-to-back singles and sophomore Jonathan Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) was intentionally walked to load the bases. Castleton was able to get the next two outs on a line-drive double play when Mooers sharply hit ball that seemed destined for left was snagged by CU third baseman De castro. De castro was able to double up Komulainen on the base path.
- With two down, sophomore Jack Leblond (Lewiston, Maine) was able to draw a walk and load the bases again for USM, and Luksza followed with an RBI walk to score Pike and give USM a 5-4 advantage. Husky senior Colby Dexter (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) broke the game open driving a bases-clearing double to the left field fence for a 9-5 lead.
- USM secured the win in the ninth when Seymour entered the game in relief and retired CU in order.
- Dexter led USM with three RBI, and was one of three Huskies to connect on a double joining Komulainen and Wilson. Komulainen and Pike each had two hits for USM.
- Sophomore reliever Dylan Miner (East Baldwin, Maine/Sacopee Valley) earned the win entering the game in the seventh and pitching two scoreless innings. Miner allowed one hit and struck out two.
UP NEXT:
Southern Maine has earned the fourth-seed in the upcoming 2022 Little East Conference Baseball Tournament Championship. Regular season champion and top-seed Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors will host the six-team double-elimination tournament May 11-May 14. The Huskies will face No. 3 UMass Boston (24-14, 11-4 LEC) on Wednesday (3:30 pm). The Huskies and the Beacons split their regular season doubleheader. UMB won game one 13-3 (8 inn.) and USM won game two 5-4.
