Jackie Luckhardt Scores 1000th Career Point

GORHAM, Maine –  Graduate student Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.) scored a team-high 14 points and added six rebounds, five assists and two steals to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 55-45 win over the Keene State College Owls in a quarterfinal game of the 2022 Little East Conference women's basketball tournament championship Tuesday night at Hill Gymnasium. Southern Maine is the fourth seed in the tournament, while Keene State is the fifth seed.
 
In a strong team effort, 10 Huskies registered at least two points in the game.  Freshman Maria Degifio (South Portland, Maine) and sophomore Franny Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) each had eight points. Ramsdell added five rebounds and two blocks.

Series History:  Facing each other for the 59th time in series history, Southern Maine now leads the overall series 46-13.  The Huskies won both regular season contests over the Owls (59-43 and 63-57).
 
Standout Huskies:  Graduate student Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.) 14 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals; sophomore Franny Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) 8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks; freshman Maria Degifico (South Portland, Maine) 8 points, 2 rebounds; senior Michelle Rowe (Gorham, Maine) 6 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals; sophomore Tamrah Gould (Manchester, N.H.) 6 points, 2-2 3FG.
 
Standout Owls: Junior Hailey Derosia (Vernon, Vt./Brattleboro) 15 points, 7 rebounds; sophomore Rylie Burgess (Rutland, Vermont) 12 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals; freshman Aryanna Murray (Nashua, N.H.) 6 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal.
 
How It Happened: 
  • In a closely played first half, Southern Maine led the Owls 22-20 at the break. Ramsdell had all eight of her points in the opening 20 minutes of action for Southern Maine, while Derosia had 11 of her 15 on 5-for-7 shooting.   
  • USM opened the third with a three from senior Katie Bagley (Hancock, Maine/Ellsworth) and outscored the 19-8 in the frame. Luckhardt's extended elbow jumper at the 3:46 mark gave USM a 35-26 lead and marked the 1000th points of her career.  Degifico and Gould each hit threes to sandwich a pair of free throws from KSC senior Brianna Metellus (Springfield, Mass./Putnam) for a 41-28 lead headed to the fourth.
  • USM grabbed its largest lead of the game, 47-29, in the first two minutes of the fourth on four points from junior Ainsely Bryant (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) and two free throws from sophomore Amy Fleming (Berwick, Maine).
  • Down 18, KSC clawed its way back rattling off seven straight points as part of a 12-2 run to trail 49-41 with 2:04 to play. Burgess scored six of her 12 points in the run, while Metellus and Freedman each had three.  Murray had two assists.
  • After a series of missed possession, Luckhardt returned USM's lead to double-digits, 51-41, with 1:07 to go, and Rowe matched Freedman at the line for a 53-43 score with 54 seconds to play.  USM senior Victoria Harris (Altus, Okla./Lewiston) scored with a strong move in the paint before Derosia hit two free throws for the 55-45 final.
 
Inside the Stats: 
  • USM's Luckardt, playing in the 109th game of her career, surpassed the 1000-point milestone with her 12th points in the game.  She now has 1002 points, 547 rebounds, 337 assists and 313 steals in her career and is just the second Husky women's basketball player to have 1000 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists and 300 steals in her career joining Hall of Famer and two-time WBCA All-American Maureen Burchill (1981-1985).
  • The Huskies were 9-for-10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and finished the game shooting 80 percent (16-for-20) from the line.  Rowe and Luckhardt were a perfect 4-for-4.
  • Led by six points each from Rowe and Gould, the Huskies' bench outscored Keene State's 20-7.

Southern Maine, the four seed in the 2022 Little East Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Championship, will travel to top-seed and 2022 LEC regular season champion Rhode Island College on Thursday (6:00 pm).
