Eastern Connecticut Fights Off Southern Maine in Double Overtime

Jackie Luckhardt Leads Huskies with 19 point; Franny Ramsdell 10 points & 8 Rebounds

WILLAMANTIC, Conn.  –  Julie Keckler hit a game-tying three at the end of the first overtime period and helped score the first six points of the second overtime period to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors to a 73-63 double-overtime win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Geissler Gymnasium.

Series History:  Today's game was the 94th meeting between the Huskies and the Warriors. With the win, ECONN picks up its 27th win against the Huskies. Southern Maine leads the series 68-26.
 
Standout Huskies:  Graduate student Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.) 19 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals; sophomore Franny Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 steal; freshman Maria Degifico (South Portland, Maine) 9 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assists, 1 block; senior Victoria Harris (Altus, Okla.) 7 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 steal.

How It Happened: 
  • Trailing 38-30 entering the fourth quarter and down the same margin 44-36 midway though the final quarter, Southern Maine rallied to force overtime outscoring the Warriors 15-7 over the next five minutes.
  • USM outscored Eastern 20-13 in the fourth quarter led by nine points from Luckhardt, five from Ramsdell and four from Degifico.  USM trailed the Warriors 51-48 after two free throws from Keckler with 10 seconds left in regulation but Luckhardt ran off a pair of screens and buried a corner three to send the game to overtime at 51-51.
  • Keckler gave ECONN the early lead in the first overtime period with a bucket in the paint, but two Luckhardt free throws tied it back up on the next possession 53-53. One of two free throws from Ramsdell and a set of free throws from Harris gave USM a 56-53 lead with 59 second left in the extra frame, but Keckler tied it back up with a three with 30 second to go and USM could not convert in its final possession setting up the second overtime.
  • ECSU scored six straight to open the second extra frame on a three from O'Brien off of an assist from Keckler before Keckler buried her own.  From there USM was unable to close the gap any closer than five and ECSU converted at the free throw line for the final.
 
Inside the Stats: 
  • Luckhardt has averaged 15.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 3.0 steals per game in the last four games. She is shotting 44 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from three during that stretch.  The Huskies' guard has 953 points, 520 rebounds, 318 assists, and 304 steals in her career.
  • Ramsdell is averaging 8.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.7 assiss and 0.7 steals per game over the last three games. She has scored in double-figures consecutively with 14 points at UMass Boston and 10 points at Eastern Connecticut.

Southern Maine remains in Little East Conference action and hosts Eastern Connecticut on Monday (5:30 pm).  Monday's game will mark the Huskies sixth game in 10 days.
