Jake Peavey (South China, Maine/Erskine Academy) and sophomore
Colby Frost (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) both went undefeated in a series of dual meets Saturday afternoon at Castleton University. Southern Maine defeated Plymouth State 48-6, and fell to Rhode Island College 24-23 and Castleton University 36-9
How It Happened
- Southern Maine won nine of 10 individual matches to defeat Plymouth State 48-6. The Huskies won six of those nine matches by fall. Peavey (285) pinned PSU's Jaylin Portillo in 4:04, while Frost (149) earned a win by fall over Robert Tarasuck in 6:01. Freshman Liam Knight (Danbury, Conn.) had the quickest pin of the match for the Huskies defeating his opponent at 133 in 22 seconds.
- Dropping a narrow decision to Rhode Island College, USM had wins from Peavey, Frost, senior Jeremy Sendrwoski (Scarborough, Maine), sophomore Anthony Mears (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic), and freshmen Caden Frost (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and Magnus Heisler (Portland, Maine/Deering) at 285, 149, 197, 141 and 165 respectively. Peavey, ranked 1 in the region and sixth nationally, defeated RIC's Michael Alfonso, ranked eighth in the region, 3-0 by decision. Ranked first in the region and in the top 20 nationally, Colby Frost had a win by fall over Eric Zane.
- Against Castleton, Peavey and sophomore Andrew Robinson were responsible for all nine of USM's points. Wrestling at 174, Robinson pinned Castleton's Cooper Fleming in 4:21. Fleming headed into the match as the no. 1 ranked wrestler at 174 in New England and the no. 12 ranked wrestler in the nation.
- In a battle of two of the top heavyweights in New England, Peavey came out victorious over Castleton's Shea Garand with a 5-0 decision. Garand is currently ranked fourth in New England.
