GORHAM, Maine. – The University of Southern Maine is proud to announce Bob Logan '70 as the 2022 receipt of the Richard "Doc" Costello Special Achievement Award. One of the highest honors awarded by Southern Maine Athletics, the award is presented annually to a USM graduate who has distinguished themselves through their commitment to student-athletes and athletics.

Logan was a four-year member of both the men's soccer and baseball teams during his time at what was then Gorham State College. Logan played under the legendary Coach Costello as a freshman, winning a starting job in the lineup as a halfback. A stout defender during his tenure in Gorham, Logan was a force to be reckoned with for the Huskies. Logan served as a team captain during his senior season and helped lead the team to a 7-2-2 record.

In addition to his success on the pitch Logan excelled on the baseball diamond as a shortstop. A four-year starter, Logan led the team in home runs and tied for the team lead in triples as a senior while hitting .302.

After graduating from Gorham State in 1970 with a degree in industrial Education, Logan took a job as an industrial education teacher at Sacopee Valley High School in Hiram, Maine. A dedicated teacher, Logan taught at Sacopee Valley for 49 years and earned numerous accolades including Maine Industrial Education Teacher of the Year in 1984-85 and New England Industrial Education Teacher of the Year in 1986. His program at Sacopee Valley also received the honor of being named the New England Industrial Arts Program of the Year in 1986.

In addition to his teaching duties, Logan coached high school sports in Maine for 31 years with stops at Sacopee Valley and Fryeburg Academy. Logan led Sacopee to boys' soccer Class B State Championship titles in 1984 and 1986 while earning the Maine Soccer Coach of the Year award each season for guiding the team's championship run. Logan claimed another state championship in 1987 as the coach of the Sacopee softball team and was named the Maine Softball Coach of the Year. Overall, Logan amassed 336 wins on the soccer pitch at the scholastic level.

An active community member, Logan also coached youth sports for many years where he passed on his knowledge of soccer, baseball, and softball to future generations. His community involvement also shined in his involvement with his family business, the RG Johnson Company, a sporting goods company in Denmark, Maine. Most notably, the family business proves that Logan and his family do not just have a knack for swing bats, but making them as well, as the company is known throughout New England for their high-quality custom bats.

"Bob Logan is a very deserving candidate for the Costello Award. He has had a long and distinguished career as a teacher and coach and has helped to positively shape and support the lives of countless young people through his work," said University of Southern Maine Director of Athletics Al Bean. "Bob also has had the unique opportunity to keep the long and storied tradition of the RG Johnson Bat Company alive and thriving for many years. He has continued to design, craft and sell custom wood bats that are used at all levels of play, including the major leagues. I'm very pleased that Bob is receiving this special recognition."

Logan resides in Denmark, Maine with his wife and fellow alum Joyce (Wellington) Logan '74.
