No. 17 WestConn Defeats Southern Maine 2-0

GORHAM, Maine  –  Gustavo Medina headed in a goal in the 17th minute to lead the No. 17  Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field. 
 
With the win, Western Connecticut completed the 2022 LEC regular season undefeated at 8-0.  The loss halts the Huskies nine-game unbeaten streak (4-0-5).

How It Happened:
  • Medina was able to find the back of the net for his first goal of the season, heading in the game-winner off of a service from Daniel Russo.
  • WestConn's Kadin Talho made it 2-0 in the 60th minute to seal the win for the Wolves, knocking in an assit from Payton Blynn for his sixth goal of the season.
  • Husky senior goalkeeper Hayes Estrella (Kennebunk, Maine/Thornton Academy) made several big saves in the game to keep WestConn at bay. Estrella finished with eight saves.

Inside The Stats:
  • WestConn outshot Southern Maine 21-4 (10-1 on frame).  The Wolves had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
  • The Huskies 6-5-7 record is their best finish in win percentage since the 2008 season (12-9-1).  Southern Maine's seven draws are the most in program history, while its 10 shutouts are second in single-season records.
  • Tying the program record for single-season shutouts, Estrella finishes with 12 shutouts in his career (27 games).  He is presently ranked second in NCAA Division III men's soccer in shutouts and is fifth in save percentage, and in the top 30 for both goals against average (.647) and total saves (90).
