Southern Maine Claims 2022 LEC Regular Title Earns No. 1 Seed for Championship Playoff

No. 1 Huskies Finish LEC Regular Season 10-2 & Host No. 8 Framingham State Tuesday, November 1 (7 pm)

GORHAM, Maine  -   Closing out the Little East Conference regular-season with a dramatic 4-3 overtime win on the road at Plymouth State University last week, the University of Southern Maine Huskies' field hockey team claimed the top-seed for the upcoming Little East Conference Championship tournament, and the rights to a home field advantage throughout the tourney.
 
Southern Maine (13-7 overall, 10-2 Little East) completed the LEC regular season with a record of 10-2, earning the program's first Little East Conference Regular Season Championship. Tied with Worcester State with a 10-2 record, the Huskies earn the top spot after the conference's tie-breaking procedures were applied.  Southern Maine defeated Worcester State 4-1 during the regular season.  
 
The Huskies will begin their 2022 Little East Conference Tournament Championship run on Tuesday, November 3, 2022 (7:00 pm) at Hannaford Field against No. 8 Framingham State University Rams.
 
Southern Maine hosted Framingham State during the regular season and earned a 6-1 win on October 11, 2022.  Husky junior Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine/Oxford Hills) scored a hat trick against the Rams, including the game-winning goal.  Senior Samantha Ellis (New Vineyard, Maine/Mt. Blue) scored a pair of goals, while sophomore Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) had a goal and an assist. 
 
Freshman goalkeeper Eleanor Folsom (Winthrop, Maine) earned the win making seven saves.  USM outshot the Rams 16-13 (13-8 on target).  
 
Setting a school record for goals in a season, the Huskies have put 70 goals on the board this season and are averaging 3.5 goals per game.  Fifty-two of those goals have come in Little East Conference action.  USM has outscored its LEC opponents 52-15 on the season. Folsom and senior goalkeeper Jullianna Kiklis (York, Maine) have combined for a conference-leading five shutouts, and a .826 save percentage.
 
Framingham State is led by Corlene Guenard's 14 goals and 13 assists. The Rams have won their last two games by the score of 2-0 over Eastern Connecticut and Fitchburg State.  FSU has scored 52 goals this season, averaging 3.1 goals per game, and is 3-2 in its last five games.  FSU's lwo recent losses were to Keene State 5-2 and Westfield State 2-1.
