GORHAM, Maine – Behind the strong starting pitching of junior
Joshua Joy (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) and senior
Gage Feeney (Cutler, Maine/Washington Academy), the University of Southern Maine Huskies swept the University of Maine at Farmington, 10-2 and 13-1, in a non-conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at
Ed Flaherty Field.
The wins extend the Huskies' winning streak to four game and improved their overall record to 19-8. The two losses extend the Beavers losing skid to seven, leaving them at 3-15 on the season.
Joy was dominating in the opener throwing seven shutout innings giving up four hits and no walks while striking out a career-high 11. The right-hander opened the game retiring the first 11 batters he faced.
Feeney followed in the nightcap pitching five scoreless frames, allowing two hits and one walk while fanning five to earn his fourth win of the season.
Game One
Joy and UMF rookie southpaw
Chris Albert (Old Town, Maine) were locked in a one-run game into the fourth when the Huskies struck for three runs. Junior
Brogan Searle-Belanger (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) brought in the first run when his popup down the right field line dropped in for a double scoring sophomore
Jonathan Wilson (East Granby, Conn.). Sophomore
Arlo Pike (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) followed with a double to score Searle-Belanger. Pike scored on rookie
Janek Luksza's (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) single to right center.
The Huskies tacked up three unearned runs in the sixth to take firm control at 7-0. Searle-Belanger had the big hit in the inning with a two-run double to left center that ended Albert's time on the hill.
Three USM runs in the seventh extended the lead to 10-0. Searle-Belanger had an RBI sacrifice fly, Luksza an RBI single, and rookie
Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) walked with the bases loaded to force in a run.
UMF scored it two runs in the eighth after Joy departed. Senior
Jordi Valls (Guatemala City, Guatemala) drove in both runs with a double to right center.
Searle-Belanger paced the Huskies' 12-hit attack with a pair of doubles and four RBI. Luksza and seniors
Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) and
Andrew Hillier (Bangor, Maine) also had two hits apiece.
Junior
Riley Bartell (Portland, Maine/Deering) had two of the Beavers' five hits. Albert took the loss after going 4.2 innings, allowing seven runs (four unearned) on seven hits and one walk He fanned three.
Game Two
The fourth inning of the nightcap proved decisive for the Huskies as they batted around to score five runs. Freshman
Donato Tocci (Portland, Maine/Portland) ignited the scoring with a two-run single through a drawn in infield. Luksza and senior
Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) also had RBI singles in the frame.
USM picked up three more in the fifth on a Wilson sacrifice fly, a wild pitch and junior
Jason Komulainen's (Gorham, Maine) RBI double.
UMaine Farmington's lone run came in the sixth on Bartell's solo home run to right center leading off the inning.
Southern Maine added three in the seventh inning on Olszak's three-run homer to center field, and one in the eighth on rookie
Christian Siciliano's (Shrewsbury, Mass./St. John's) ground out.
Olszak finished the game with three hits and five RBI. Hillier and Komulainen also had three hits as the Huskies pounded out 15 hits.
Bartell had a pair of hits for the Beavers to finish the doubleheader 4 for 8. Freshman
Ky Morris (East Wenatchee, Wash./Eastmont) was tagged with the loss.
Up Next
Southern Maine is scheduled to play a doubleheader with Plymouth State University on Tuesday. UMaine Farmington is off until next Friday (May 7) when it hosts the University of Maine at Presque Isle for a North Atlantic doubleheader.
