Box Score Castleton, Vt. – The University of Southern Maine men's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2021 season on Saturday, sweeping the singles and doubles points on the way to a 9-0 victory over the Castleton University Spartans. With the win the Huskies improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 0-3.

Senior Adam Papayoanou (Valencia, Calif./Hart) and sophomore Gabriel Couture (Boucherville, Quebec/Fadette) had the most decisive victories of the day for the Huskies at first and fifth singles, each winning their matches 6-0, 6-0. Papayoanou defeated the Spartans' Jason Lipscomb and Couture took down Rafael Robles. At second and third singles, senior Shawn Gagnier (Lewiston, Maine, Lewiston) and junior Jonathan Bartuccio-Pereira (St. Bruno, Quebec/Antoine-Girourard) both claimed victory in two sets. Gagnier won 7-5, 6-1 over Rowan Kidder and Bartuccio-Pereira beat Connor Davis 6-3, 6-3. 

At fourth singles, freshman Ethan Rudnicki (Levant, Maine/Hermon) bounced back after dropping the first set 2-6, for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Alijah Seymour. Sophomore Ryan Geary (Derry, NH/Pinkerton Academy) also picked up points for the Huskies winning his match by default.

The Huskies swept the doubles points as well, led by an 8-1 victory from Papayoanou and Gagnier at first doubles over Levi Williams and Kidder. Bartuccio-Pereira and Rudnicki took the match at second doubles 8-6 against Lipscomb and Davis, while Couture and Geary won 8-4 at third doubles over Seymour and Robles. 

The Huskies are back in action Saturday, April 10th as they host Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference match scheduled for 2pm.
