Colby Downs Southern Maine in Narrow Overtime Victory

GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Megan Rittenhouse (Tampa, Fla./Westminster School) netted the game-winner for the Colby College Mules two minutes into overtime as the Mules took down the Huskies 2-1 on Sunday in an exhibition match on Hannaford Field. The Huskies celebrated seniors Julia Nicol (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and Hayden Spencer (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill) prior to the game.

THE RECORDS: As an exhibition match does not affect a team's record, Southern Maine ends the season at (0-2), while Colby stays at (0-0).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Huskies struck first on a goal from junior Maddie Pullen (Levant, Maine/Hermon), late in the third quarter. Freshman Brooke Carson (Woodstock, Maine/Oxford Hills) sent the ball into the striking circle with thirty seconds left in the period, giving Pullen the chance to put the Huskies on the board.
  • Senior Emily Hogan (Waterville, Maine/Messalonskee) evened the score for the Mules midway through the fourth quarter.
  • The Mules were able to take advantage of a penalty corner two minutes into overtime. Rittenhouse took the penalty corner for the Mules and connected with freshman Lillian Kistner (Chevy Chase, Md./St. John's) who drove the ball into the striking circle. Rittenhouse got a stick on Kistner's pass and sent the game-winner into the back of the net.
THE GOALKEEPERS:
  • USM sophomore Julianna Kiklis (York, Maine/York) made 10 saves in the loss, including one crucial stop with fourteen seconds left in the fourth period.
  • Freshman Emily Loeb (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola) made three saves in the win for Colby.
