Farley Collects 100th Career Point as Southern Maine Defeats Eastern Connecticut 18-11

USM Earns No. 2 Seed for Upcoming Little East Conference Championship

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Alex Farley (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) scored six goals to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to an 18-11 victory over the visiting Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors in Little East Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
With their third straight win, the Huskies finished the regular season at 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the conference.  The Warriors had their two-game winning streak stopped by the loss and finished at 9-5 overall, 3-4 in LEC play.
Southern Maine finished in a three-way tie for second place in the final standings and will be the second seed by virtue of the tiebreaker in the upcoming LEC championships tournament that starts Tuesday.  The Huskies will receive a first round bye and host the winner of the game between Plymouth State University and Castleton University on Thursday.  Eastern Connecticut is locked in as the fifth seed and travels to Keene State College for a first round game.
Farley became the 17th player in the program's history to reach the century mark for points when she scored her sixth goal of the game with 11:37 to play.  In 63 career games, Farley has tallied 90 goals and passed off 10 assists for 100 points.
Graduate student Jennifer Darasz (Gorham, Maine), senior Megan Violette (Portland, Maine/Deering) and junior Rachel Shanks (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) complemented Farley on offense for the Huskies.  Darasz had five goals and one assist, Violette contributed four goals and one assist, and Shanks chipped in with two goals and three assists.
Senior goalie Mariah Vaillancourt (Lewiston, Maine/Edward Little) played a strong game recording 13 saves and coming up with four ground balls.
Senior Tristan Kijak (Windsor, Conn.) matched Farley for game-high honors with six goals to lead Eastern.  Sophomore Caroline Stent (Weatogue, Conn./Ethel Walker) added four goals and two assists.  Sophomore goalie Sarah Gallagher (South Windsor, Conn.) stopped 10 shots.
After spotting the Warriors a 2-0 lead on goals from Kijak and Stent in the opening 2:07 of play, the Huskies responded with 10 consecutive goals to open a 10-2 lead with 5:05 left to play in the first half.  After Stent snapped the string of USM goals with her second marker, Darasz scored with a second remaining to make it 11-3 at intermission.
Eastern closed to within five on two occasions in the second half, the last at 13-8 following a Kijak free-position goal at 22:22.  A 4-1 run for the Huskies over the next 11 minutes effectively put the game away.
Southern Maine had a 35-29 edge in shots and a 23-19 advantage in ground balls.  Eastern dominated the center circle controlling 20 of 30 draws.  Sophomore Mackenzie Shrewsbury (Sprague, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) led all players with eight draw controls, and Stent collected six.
