GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman
Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) went 5 for 8 with three doubles, a home run and four RBI as the University of Southern Maine Huskies swept a Little East Conference doubleheader from the Keene State College Owls by scores of 6-4 and 10-5 Sunday afternoon at
Ed Flaherty Field.
The two wins extended the 21st-ranked Huskies current winning streak to four games, and improved their record to 14-6 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The Owls have dropped seven straight to stand at 2-11 overall and 1-6 in LEC play.
In the opening game of the twin bill, Seymour became the 20th player in program history to have three doubles in a single game, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored. In the nightcap, Seymour was 2 for 4, including his team-leading seventh home run of the season, with two runs scored and four RBI. Led by Seymour, Southern Maine had 24 hits in the doubleheader.
Game One
Southern Maine had to come from behind in the eighth inning of the opener to secure the victory. Seymour ignited a three-run rally with his third double of the game. After senior
Andrew Hillier (Bangor, Maine) was plunked with a pitch, both runners moved up on a balk. Seymour scored, with Hillier moving to third, on a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Jonathan Wilson (East Granby, Conn.). Hillier scored the go ahead run on a single through the left side from sophomore
Tom Vesosky (Colchester, Vt.). Vesosky, running on the pitch, scored all the way from first on a single to center off the bat of junior
Jason Komulainen (Gorham, Maine).
Keene State had taken a 4-3 against USM senior
Ben Lambert (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) in the top half of the frame on an RBI single from junior
Brendan Eaton (Nottingham, N.H./Coe-Brown).
The Owls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third after two outs. Three singles and two walks produced three runs. Sophomore
Josh Beayon (Pittsford, Vt./Otter Valley) drove in the first two with a single, and senior
Joe Barter (Coventry, R.I./Mt. St. Charles) followed with an RBI single.
Southern Maine got two back in the fifth on a two-run single from junior
Sam Troiano (South Portland, Maine). The Huskies tied it in the sixth on doubles by Seymour and Wilson.
Seymour and Troiano had three hits apiece in the game. Vesosky had a pair of hits and two runs scored. Freshman
Bryce Afthim (Windham, Maine) picked up the win in relief of Lambert. Seymour came on to record the final two outs via strikeouts to record his first career save. Lambert finished the game with a no decision, striking out 11.
In addition to going 3 for 4 at the plate, Beayon pitched the first seven innings for the Owls. He allowed three runs on nine hits and did not walk a batter. He struck out six. Senior
Ryan Sliwinski (Sherborn, Mass.) took the loss.
Game Two
The Huskies had to come from behind again trailing 2-0 before scoring three in the home half of the fourth, and six more in the fifth.
In the fourth, USM took advantage of two hits, a walk and two Owl miscues to plate three unearned runs. Seymour had a two-run single in the frame.
The next inning, the Huskies batted around to score six. Vesosky had an RBI triple to start the rally. Troiano and senior
Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) had RBI singles, and Seymour capped off the rally with a two-run homer into the trees in right center field.
Keene State came back for three runs in the seventh getting five singles in the inning. Junior
Mike Collins (Auburn, Mass.) and sophomore
Mark Barrett (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) had RBI singles, and the third run came home on a ground out from senior
Josh DeFrancisco (Bridgeport, Conn./Fairfield Prep).
Seymour would score the final run in the home half of the seventh scoring from first on a double to right center from Hillier.
Sophomore
Arlo Pike (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) led the Huskies' 12-hit attack going 4 for 4 with a walk and two runs scored. Seymour was the only other repeat hitter for USM. Senior hurler
Gage Feeney (Cutler, Maine/Washington Academy) evened his record at 2-2 working five innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three.
Barrett and Barter had a pair of safeties for the Owls. Senior
