WATERVILLE, Maine – Despite a career-best 18 points from freshman guard
Franny Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) the University of Southern Maine Huskies could not overcome a cold first-half shooting effort falling to the Colby College Mules 68-51 in a women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Margaret M. Crook Center.
The Huskies will host the Mules in the second of two games against Colby tomorrow at 2:00 pm at Hill Gym. The Huskies are 1-4 on the season. Colby, playing in its first game of 2021, is 1-0.
Ramsdell had game-high scoring honors knocking down 6-of-11 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Junior
Victoria Harris (Altus, Okla./Lewiston) added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Senior
Mary Toman (Gardiner, Maine) and sophomore
Meg Kelly (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) each added six points. Toman had five boards, an assist and a blocked shot.
Mycala Carney went 7-for-11 from the floor for a team-high 17 points to lead four Mules in double figures. She added a team-high eight rebounds and a pair of assists. Keagan Dunbar had 14 points, while Adaobi Nebuwa and Alisha Aube each had 10 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Colby shot a solid 13-for-25 in the first half to lead Southern Maine 39-22 at the break. The Huskies were ice cold in the first two quarters connecting on just 7-of-37 from the floor. Nebuwa led the Mules at the half with eight points.
- The Mules outscored USM 15-7 in the second quarter shooting 60.0 percent (6-for-10) from the floor. The Huskies had more than double the looks at the basket over Colby with 22 shot attempts, thanks in part to seven offensive rebounds and six Mule turnovers, but the Huskies could not convert making just 3-of-22 from the floor.
- In the third and fourth, USM matched Colby's offense with each team scoring 13 points and 16 points respectively. Ramsdell scored 11 of her career best 18 in the second half.
INSIDE THE STATS
- Harris and senior Morgan Eliasen (Lewiston, Maine) each had three offensive rebounds for USM. The Huskies snagged 11 offensive boards in the game and outscored Colby 7-4 in second chance points.
- Led by Ramsdell and Harris, USM's bench outscored Colby's 39-34.
