BANGOR, Maine -- For the second straight day, the 11th-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies swept the Husson Eagles in a non-conference baseball doubleheader at the Winkin Complex on Sunday. The Huskies took the opening game 13-1 before completing the sweep with a 5-2 win in the nightcap.
The Huskies swept the four-game weekend series from the Eagles to open the season 4-0. The Eagles fall to 0-4. The two teams are scheduled to meet for one more game at USM on May 9.
Game One
Senior
Gage Feeney (Cutler, Maine/Washington Academy) and four relievers combined to spin a three-hitter. Feeney went the first five innings allowing one run on two hits to earn his 17th career win. Feeney walked none and struck out seven. Senior
Colton Lawrence (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) and freshmen
Lucas Francis (Lisbon, Maine),
Dylan Miner (East Baldwin, Maine/Sacopee Valley) and
Ethan Brown (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) each followed with a scoreless inning.
The Huskies bats pounded out 14 hits, including three home runs, off the offerings of three Eagle hurlers. Junior
Sam Troiano (South Portland,. Maine) hit a three-run homer in the third, sophomore
Jonathan Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) had a solo shot in the fifth, and senior
Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, the 24th of his career moving him into a tie for ninth place among USM's all-time home run leaders.
Southern Maine jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single from freshman
Janek Luksza (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) and a two-run double from sophomore
Tom Vesosky (Colchester, Vt.).
Troiano's three-run round tripper doubled the lead in the third, and the Huskies added another run on a sacrifice fly from junior
Jason Komulainen (Gorham, Maine).
The Huskies added two runs in the fifth, highlighted by Wilson's second home run in two days, single runs in the sixth and eighth, and two unearned runs in the ninth.
Husson's lone run came in the third inning on an RBI single from junior
Koby Rogerson (Brewer, Maine). Sophomore
Hunter O'Connor (Waltham, Vt./Vergennes Union), the first of three Eagle pitchers, took the loss.
Game Two
The Huskies used a three-run uprising in the fifth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and went on to the 5-2 win. Freshman
Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) broke the tie with his one-out RBI double. Seymour would score on an infield throwing error on Wilson's ground ball. Wilson came in to score the third run on sophomore
Arlo Pike's (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) single.
Wilson and Pike combined to give USM a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Wilson opened the frame with a triple to left-center field, and scored on Pike's single. Pike scored the Huskies' second run in the fourth inning coming home on senior
Andrew Olszak's (Danvers, Mass.) RBI single.
Husson tied the game in the home half of the fourth putting together three straight hits to produce two runs. Junior
Ethan Stoddard (Old Town, Maine) had an RBI triple, and scored on a single from junior
Austin Baron (Ellsworth, Maine).
Freshman
Bryce Afthim (Windham, Maine), the second of four USM pitchers utilized, picked up his first career win with three scoreless innings of relief work. Afthim did not give up a hit, walked two and struck out three. Lawrence and senior
Gavin Arsenault (Dixfield, Maine/Dirigo) followed Afthim pitching a scoreless inning.
Husson made things interesting in the bottom of the inning loading the bases with two outs on two singles and an outfield error, but Arsenault struck out the final batter to earn a save.
Pike, Troiano and Olszak paced the Huskies' 10 hit attack with a pair of singles. Baron and senior
Chris Ewanik (Spruce Grove, Alberta) had two hits apiece for the Eagles. Graduate student
Jesse Colford (Bangor, Maine), the second of five Husson pitchers, was tagged with the loss.
