UMaine Farmington Uses Strong Second Half, Defeats Southern Maine 90-64

Hendricks and Lombard in Double Digit Scoring For USM

FARMINGTON, Maine – Terion Moss had a game-high 22 points, adding six rebounds and three steals, to lead four players in double-figures as the UMaine Farmington Beavers outscored the University of Southern Maine Huskies 52-28 in the second half, to earn a 90-64 win Saturday afternoon at Dearborn Gymnasium.

            The win is the second straight for the Beavers who are now 2-0 on the season.  The loss is the first of the season for the Huskies who are now 2-1.  Southern Maine returns to action on the road and travels to Plymouth State University on Wednesday (6:00 pm).

            Moss was 8-for-10 from the free throw line and 6-for-20 from the field for his game-high 22 points.  Kyle Donlin and Nathan Violette each scored 18 points for the Beavers, while Jack Kane tossed in 17 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to complete the double-double. UMF shot 45.7 percent (32-for-70) from the field, and 73.1 percent (19-for-26) from the free throw line in the win.

            Senior Keenan Hendricks (Owls Head, Maine/Oceanside) led the Huskies with 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting, including a 3-for-5 mark from three-point range. Junior Jason Lombard (Pelham, N.H./Chugiak (AK)) added 10 points, three assists and three steals, and sophomore Cody Hawes (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) had nine points and nine rebounds off of the bench.  Sophomore Marcus Christopher (Skowhegan, Maine) and senior Derek Haney (Auburn, Calif./Placer) each had eight points, while Christopher led USM on the glass with 10 boards.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Down two, 30-28, after a bucket from USM's Cody Hawes, UMaine Farmington outscored the Huskies 10-6 in the final 3:30 of the first half to take a narrow 38-36 lead into the break. Moss had nine of his 22 in the opening half, while the Huskies were led by eight points from Lombard.
  • Both teams shot well in the first half. USM shot 45.7 (16-for-35) from the field in the first, and UMF connected on 45.5 percent (15-for-33) of its attempts. 
  • Moss (13 points), Violette (11 points), Kane (11 points) and Donlin (10 points) led the UMF offense in the second half as the Beavers knocked down 45.9 percent (17-of-37) from the field to outscore USM 52-28 in the half.  Donlin and Violette were both 4-for-5 from the field in the effort.
  • USM's shooting percentage dipped in the second to 23.8 percent (10-of-42) and the Huskies committed eight second half turnovers.
  • The Huskies held a 55-50 lead with 12:10 left in the game on a free throw from freshman Trevor Ward (West Park, Fla.) but the Beavers surged ahead on a 24-2 run over the next six minutes to seize control of the game 74-57 with 6:11 on the clock.
  • Five different players scored for UMF in the pivotal run led by six points each from Moss and Violette.
  • USM went 1-for-11 during the Beavers' run.  Hendricks hit a three with 5:26 to play to make it a 74-60 Huskies' deficit, but UMF outscored USM 16-4 in the final five for the 90-64 final.
 
NOTES:
  • Through three games, sophomore Marcus Christopher is averaging 13.7 rebounds per game. He has had at least 10 rebounds in each game, and has a career-high of 21.  He is averaging five offensive rebounds per game.
  • Senior Keenan Hendricks is averaging 3.0 three-point field goals per game.  He is shooting 39.1 percent from long range.
