RIC Holds Off Southern Maine 64-56


GORHAM, Maine  –  Junior Antonia Corsinetti (Johnston, R.I./St. Mary Academy-Bay View) scored 13 points to lead three players in double-figures as the Rhode Island College Anchormen held off the University of Southern Maine Huskies 64-56 in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Hill Gymnasium. 
 
The Records:

Series History:  Squaring off of the 88th time in series history, dating back to the 1977-78 season, RIC is earned its 19th win against the Huskies.  USM lead the series 69-18.
 
Standout Huskies:  Senior Victoria Harris (Altus, Okla./Lewiston) 13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 blocked shot; sophomore Amy Fleming (Berwick, Maine/Noble) 11 points; Graduate student Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.) 8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists; sophomore Ashlee Aceto (South Portland, Maine) 5 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 steal.
 
Standout Anchormen: Corsinette 13 points; senior Marie Gallagher (Worcester, Mass.) 11 points, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 blocked shot; sophomore Ashanti Frazier (Newington, Conn.) 10 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists.
 
How It Happened: 
  •   Down 15, 46-31, entering the fourth quarter, Southern Maine used a strong defensive effort and points in the paint to rattle off a 14-1 run in the first three minutes to pull to within a bucket of RIC.  Sophomore Franny Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) led the Huskies defense in the fourth, forcing RIC into four turnovers.  Harris (6 points), Fleming (5 points) and Aceto (3 points) each scored in the run.
  • RIC countered with a run of its own, however, scoring nine unanswered points, including a 5-for-5 effort from the free throw line and two layups from Frazier for a 56-45 lead with 4:17 to play.
  • With Fleming driving to the basket and either netting a layup or free throws, USM cut into the RIC lead and was down 59-51 with 1:04 to go, but the Anchormen closed the game on the line for a 64-56 final.
  • USM led RIC 17-15 after the first quarter but trailed 26-20 at the half, as both teams struggled offensively in the second quarter. RIC used a 20-11 third quarter, led by six points from Gallagher for the 15-point lead headed into the fourth.  USM outscored RIC 25-18 in the final quarter.
 
Inside the Stats: 
  • USM scored 17 of its 54 points off of RIC turnovers. The Anchormen had 22 turnovers in the contest, and Southern Maine had 12 steals.  Luckahrdt and Harris each had three steals for USM.
  • After today's games, Luckhardt now has 841 points, 475 rebounds, 292 assists, and 276 steals in her 67-game career. She is fifth in career steals behind Renee Nicholas '12 with had 287 from 2008-2012. 
  • Harris is also closing in on milestones.  She has 720 points, 374 rebounds, 112 steals, 72 blocked shots and 47 assists in 67 games.   
Up Next: 
Southern Maine travels to Castleton University on Saturday (1:00 pm) for a Little East Conference match up.  The game is the last contest of 2021 for the Huskies.  USM returns to action in January and will travel to Plymouth State on Wednesday, January 5 (5
:30 pm) in LEC action.
