2021 Little East Conference Women’s Soccer Semifinal: No.23 WestConn 3, USM 0

Huskies Complete Season 12-4-3

DANBURY, Conn.  –  Julia DePalma broke through for the second-half game-winner, and Myah Croze added a brace as top-seed and no. 23 nationally-ranked Western Connecticut State University women's soccer defeated the fifth-seed University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-0 in a semifinal game of the 2021 Little East Conference Tournament Thursday night at Western Athletic Complex.
 
The Records:

WestConn defeated the Huskies by the same margin in the regular season, and leads the 32-game series 31-1.  Southern Maine last defeated WestConn on October 21, 2000 (1-0 in overtime). 
 
USM earned the fifth seed in the LEC tournament with a 4-3-1 record. WestConn, the regular season champion, earned the top seed finishing the LEC regular season undefeated at 8-0. 
 
Earning a spot in the tournament for just the 10th time in program history, USM has earned a spot in the tourney in two of the three seasons (excluding 2020 for COVID) under head coach Seth Benjamin (2018, 2021).
 
How It Happened:
  • WestConn had nine shots on goal to USM's three in the opening half, but Husky sophomore goalkeeper Bre Atwood (Franklin, Mass.) turned in a strong performance making nine first half saves to keep the scoreboard at zeros.
  • WestConn got on the board early in the second half as DePalma headed in the game-winner off of a corner kick service from Hannah Daly in the 46th minute.
  • Croze doubled the WestConn lead in the 59th minute, and then completed the brace in the 65th for the 3-0 final.  Croze has a team and LEC-leading 26 goals this season.  
 
The Goalkeepers:
  • Sophomore Bre Atwood (Franklin, Mass.) made a career-high 11 saves for the Huskies.  She finished an outstanding rookie campaign with a record of 10-4-2, making 77 saves with a 1.16 goals against average.
  • WestConn goalkeeper Karly Martin made six saves to earn the shutout. 
 
Inside the Stats:
  • WestConn finished the game with a 14-6 lead in shots on goal and an 8-4 lead in corner kicks.
 
Up Next:
WestConn advances to the championship game of the 2021 Little East Conference Women's Soccer tournament on Saturday, November 6 (tba). As the top seed, WestConn will be the host, and will take on UMass Boston. UMass Boston, the second seed in the tourney, earned a 4-1 win over Castleton in the other semifinal.
