Strong First Half Leads Bates Over USM 92-74

Four Players in Double Digits for the Huskies

LEWISTON, Maine  –  Omar Sarr had a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds at halftime as the Bates College Bobcats defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 92-74 in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday night Alumni Gymnasium. 
 
Sarr finished with 12 points and 16 rebounds as one of six Bates players in double-digits.

Series History:  Tonight's match-up is the 44th in the series history between the two schools.  Bates has won the last two consecutively.  USM leads the overall series 26-18.
 
Standout Huskies:  Jacobe Thomas (Houston, Texas/Davis) 19 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists; Cody Hawes (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) 17 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists; Chance Dixon (Lake Worth, Fla.) 15 points, 4-5 3FG.  
 
Standout Bobcats:  Stephon Baxter, 25 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assist; Jahmir Primer 14 points, 5 assists; Omar Sarr 12 points, 16 rebounds.
 
How It Happened: 
  • Bates scored the first seven points of the game and raced out to a 23-7 half way through the first.  Bates shot 42.9 percent in the opening half and had a 29-15 edge on the glass to take a 42-29 lead into the halftime break. 
  • Led by five points from Thomas and four from Hawes, Southern Maine opened the second half with a 14-5 run to make it a two-possession game 47-43 with 14:58 remaining. However, Bates outscored the Huskies 16-7 over the next five minutes to regain its double-digit advantage 63-50 with 10:29 on the clock. Six different Bobcats scored in the run.
  • A pair of free throws from Hawes made it an eight point game, 65-57, with just over eight to play but the Bobcats closed out the game with a 7-0 spurt to lead 72-57 and led by as many as 22 points late en route to the 92-74 final.
 
Inside the Stats: 
  •  Four Huskies reached double-digits in scoring, including Thomas, Hawes, Dixon and senior Jason Lombard (Anchorage, Alaska), who finished with 11 points.
  • Hawes has scored in double-digits in the last four games consecutively and six of the Huskies' seven games. 
  • Thomas has led USM in scoring in four of seven games and is averaging 20.6 points per game. He is also leading the Huskies in rebounds and is third in assists and second in steals.
