Mbungu Brace Leads Keene State Over Southern Maine 2-0

GORHAM, Maine  –  Mbambi Mbungu (Kabimba, DR Congo) scored a goal in each half to lead the Keene State College Owls to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in Little East Conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
 
Facing each other for the 58th time in series history, the Owls now lead the series 36-14-8.  KSC improves to 2-2-1 on the road this season.

How It Happened:
  • Mbungu put the Owls up early scoring his first goal of the game in the fourth minute. Senior Ethan Rose (Uncasville, Conn.) lofted the ball into the box to a wide-open Mbungu who smartly finished the ball to the left of the Huskies' on-rushing goalkeeper senior Hayes Estrella (Kennebunk, Maine/Thornton Academy).
  • USM had a pair of chances to score the equalizer in the first half on solid strikes from sophomore Yahya Altaie (Westbrook, Maine) and junior Sean Brueninghaus (Superior, Wisconsin) but KSC goalkeeper graudate student Nate Howard (Manchester, Conn.) made both saves to keep the Owls up 1-0 at the break.
  • Keene State doubled its advantage 17 minutes into the second half as Mbungu scored his fifth goal of the season in the 62nd minute. Mbungu hit the ball to the near post to complete the assit from junior Noah Spaulding (Claremont, N.H.).
The Goalkeepers:
  •  Estrella made three saves in the loss for USM.
  • Howard made five saves to earn the shutout. .
 
Up Next:
            Southern Maine hosts UMaine Farmington in non-conference action on Tuesday (7:00 pm) for its next contest. Keene State faces Eastern Connecticut on Monday (2:30 pm) in an LEC match up.
