Box Score Huskies Face Norwich University on Sunday
RUTLAND, Vt. -- Freshman Darby Palisi's (Concord, N.H.) second goal of the game at 2:02 of overtime gave the Castleton University Spartans a 3-2 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's action Saturday afternoon at Spartan Arena. The game was a battle of the two teams tied for second place in the NEHC standings.
The win gives the Spartans sole possession of second place with three league games to play in the regular season. The Spartans snapped a three-game winless stretch (0-2-1) and improve to 11-8-3 overall, 8-3-2 in league play. The Huskies had their four-game winning streak snapped to fall to 10-11-2 overall and 8-6-0 in NEHC games.
Tied 1-1 heading into the third period, the Spartans grabbed the lead at 3:44 on a goal from sophomore Ryanne Mix (Kennewick, Wash.) just after a Spartan power play expired. Southern Maine got the equalizer with 4:03 remaining in regulation when rookie Maddy Young (Westford, Vt.) tallied her second goal of the season off an assist from classmate Peyton Dukas (Fairfield, Vt.).
Palisi's first goal of the game, unassisted, at 5:59 of the opening period was the lone marker of the first 20 minutes of play.
Senior Katie Nolan (Dorchester, Mass.) scored a power-play goal at 4:54 of the second period to get the Huskies even. Classmate Grace Simmons (Buffalo, N.Y.) and sophomore Julianne Nelson (Armstrong, B.C.) picked up the assists. The goal was the sixth of the season for Nolan.
Southern Maine is back in action tomorrow afternoon (2:30 p.m.) traveling to league leader Norwich University. Castleton will host Suffolk University on Sunday (5 p.m.).
