RIC Overpowers Southern Maine 71-55

PROVIDENCE, R.I.   –  Willicia McBorrough notched a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds on 7-for-11 shooting from the field to lead the Rhode Island College Anchormen to a 71-55 win over the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at RIC.  

         With the win, Rhode Island College moves to 17-4 overall and 9-3 in the Little East Conference.  The Huskies dip to 9-12 overall, and 4-7 in Little East play.  RIC has the season sweep over USM. 

         McBorrough was one of two RIC players in double-figures, adding four blocked shots, an assists and a steal.  Sophia Guerrier added 16 points, four rebounds and four steals on a 6-for-13 shooting effort.  Jordyn Gauvin added eight points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists. 

         Southern Maine sophomore Victoria Harris (Altus, Okla./Lewiston) paced the Huskies with a game-high 17 points, six rebounds and two steals.  Senior Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.) and junior Abi Ramirez (Portland, Maine) each scored 10 points for the Huskies.  Luckhardt added six rebounds, four steals and an assist, while Ramirez had four rebounds and a pair of steals.  

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  •  Led by six first quarter points from Brooke Young, RIC shot 42.1 percent from the field in the opening quarter to take a strong 21-9 lead over the Huskies.  USM made 5-of-6 free throws in the quarter, but shot just 2-of-13 from the field to fall behind early. 
  • USM's Ramirez gave the Huskies a spark in the second quarter scoring eight of her 10 points on 3-for-4 shooting, including a three-pointer as her team kept pack with RIC in the frame but went into the halftime break down 41-24. 
  • RIC's Fataya Larry scored six points and Guerrier had four of her 16 in the third quarter as the Anchormen outpaced the Huskies 20-13.  USM again struggled from the field, making just 3-of-16 from the floor, but making 6-of-6 from the free throw line.  Harris led USM in the third with six points. 
  • The Huskies outscored RIC 18-10 in the fourth led by seven from Harris on 3-of-6 shooting, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Anchormen's lead in the end.  USM shot 54.5 percent in the fourth and held RIC to a 4-for-14 effort from the field. 
  • RIC outshot USM 41.3 percent to 31.5 percent for the game.  RIC also held a large lead on the boards outrebounding USM 50-31 and scored 26 points on second-chance buckets.  

HUSKY NOTES: 

  • Luckhardt had 724 points, 404 rebounds, 236 assists and 235 steals in her career.  She is now tied for ninth in career steals with her 235 total.  
  • Harris is closing in on her 500th career point and has 481 with today's 17 point performance.  She has 481 points, 235 rebounds, 66 steals and 50 blocked shots through 48 career games. 

UP NEXT: 

         Southern Maine remains in Little East Conference action and travels to Eastern Connecticut on Saturday (1:00 pm).
