GORHAM, Maine – Sophia Guerrier had 14 points, five rebounds, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot to lead four players in double figures as the Rhode Island College Anchormen pulled a away from the University of Southern Maine Huskies with a pivotal fourth quarter run to earn a 68-59 win in Little East Conference women's basketball action Tuesday night at Hill Gymnasium.
With the win, Rhode Island College remains undefeated in the Little East Conference at 4-0 and improves to 11-1 overall. Southern Maine has its two-game win-streak ended and evens out at 7-7 overall and 2-3 in the LEC.
Guerrier was 5-for-10 from the field before fouling out of the contest late in the game. Maci Dorantes had 13 points and six rebounds off of the bench for RIC, while Willcia McBorrough had 12 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots and Jordyn Gauvin added 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
USM sophomore Victoria Harris (Altus, Okla./Lewiston) led all scorers with 16 points and finished with nine rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot. Junior Abi Ramirez (Portland, Maine) added 13 points, four assists and three rebounds, while senior Katie Howe (New Boston, N.H./Goffstown) had nine points, and four rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Up by a single possession, 43-41, with 8:24 left in the game after an and-one play from USM's Harris, Rhode Island College strung together a critical 10-2 run to create separation and held for the win.
- Four different players scored for RIC in the run, including threes from Guerrier and Dorantes.
- USM pulled to within eight, 58-50, on three free throws from Howe with 1:38 to go, but the Anchormen responded again with seven consecutive points for a 65-50 lead with just under a minute to go. The Huskies closed the game on a 9-3 run for the 68-59 final.
INSIDE THE STATISTICS:
- In a high-scoring fourth quarter, RIC outscored USM 27-23. The Anchormen outscored USM 26-16 in the paint, and scored 17 of their 68 points off of USM turnovers.
- Both teams racked up 44 rebounds and USM had 18 offensive boards.
