NEW LONDON, N.H.  –  Junior Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine/Windham) had a goal and an assist to highlight a 3-0 win for the University of Southern Maine Huskies over the Colby-Sawyer College Chargers in a non-conference women's soccer game Wednesday afternoon at Kelsey Field. 

The win is the second straight for the Huskies who open their 2019 season at 2-0.  Colby-Sawyer drops its first game of the season to dip to 2-1.   Today's game marked the first time since the 1991 season that the two schools met on the field.  USM leads the six-game series, 4-2-0.

Berthiaume put the Huskies on the board early in the first half, scoring an unassisted goal in the 10th minute. Berthiaume then helped Southern Maine double its advantage in the 34th minute finding sophomore Alex Allain (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) for her second goal of the 2019 season. 

In her second season with USM, Berthiaume's goal, her first of the season, is her 14th of her career, while her assist on Allain's goal was her 10th.  With 38 career points in 22 games, Berthiaume is now 10th in career points, and tied for fifth in career assists (10), and 12th in career goals (14).  

Southern Maine carried the 2-0 lead through the half and snagged a 3-0 lead late in regulation.  Sophomore Hayleigh Blanchard (Portland, Maine) scored her first intercollegiate goal in the 83rd, finding the back of the net on an assist from freshman Katie Lynch (Bellingham, Mass./Mount Saint Charles). The assist is Lynch's first collegiate points of her career. 

Southern Maine freshman goalkeeper Kayla Gorman (Windham, Maine) earned the win, playing 86:55 and making seven saves.  Junior Chantel Gagnon (Biddeford, Maine) played the final minutes in goal for the Huskies, and did not make a save.  Colby-Sawyer goalkeeper Sam Mitchell took the loss making nine saves.  

Southern Maine outshot the Chargers 20-16, while Colby-Sawyer held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
