Castleton Defeats Southern Maine 3-1

GORHAM, Maine  –  Jack Kingdon scored a brace and added an assist to lead the Castleton University Spartans to a 3-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field. 

With the win, Castleton earns its first conference victory of the season and first road-win of the season to improve to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference.  Southern Maine falls to 0-8-2 and 0-2 in the LEC.

ON THE PITCH: 

After a scoreless first half, Kingdon broke through for the first of his two goals of the game in the 63rd minute.  Kingdon won a ball in the midfield and then used his speed to carry it into the area freeing space, taking a shot from left to right for the far post and a 1-0 Spartan advantage. 

Minutes later, Southern Maine junior Joseph Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) earned a penalty kick after being taken down in the box in the 66th minute.  Kalilwa converted the kick to the high left side of the goal for his second score of the season, equalizing the game. 

In the 71st, Kindgon tallied his team-leading eighth goal of the season, again breaking through the Huskies defense with speed and connecting on another far post strike for a 2-1 Castleton lead.  The Spartans added an insurance goal in the 73rd when Kindgon carried the ball down the left side of the field and slotted in a square ball to the top of the six for an easy put-away from Jacob Henderson and the 3-0 final. 

INSIDE THE STATS: 

Castleton had a 26-10 advantage in shots, including a 12-3 margin in shots on goal.  The Spartans also had nine corner kicks to none for the Huskies. 

THE GOALKEEPERS: 

USM sophomore goalkeeper Cameron Atherton turned in a strong performance despite the loss, making nine saves and several defensive clears.  Alex Fernald earned the win for the Spartans making two saves. 

NEXT GAME:  

            Southern Maine remains in Little East Conference action and will travel to Plymouth State University on Wednesday (3:30 pm) for its next contest
