Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Senior Callum Heaslewood (Kennebunkport, Maine) headed in a far-post goal in the 63rd minute to lead the University of New England Nor'easters to a 1-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
With the win, UNE improves to 2-2-1 overall. Southern Maine dips to 0-5-2 with the loss. Meeting for the 54th time in series history, Southern Maine leads the overall record 33-16-5; UNE has won the last two contests.
ON THE PITCH:
Locked in a scoreless battle, Heaselwood headed in a service from graduate student Lee Esposito (Aplaus, N.Y./Niskayuna). Esposito drove a lofted cross to the far post, and Heaselwood was able to head it down and away to the lower corner of the net for the eventual game-winner. The goal marked Heaselwood's fourth of the season and second game-winner.
INSIDE THE STATS:
Both teams were fairly statistically even with UNE leading in shots 14-11, while both teams had three corner kicks each. The Nor'easter's had five shots on target, compared to one for the Huskies. USM freshman Zach Allocca (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) had a near miss in the 24thminute heading a ball with force off of the right post.
THE GOALKEEPERS:
Junior goalkeeper Camden Spear (Boothbay, Maine) made one save to earn the shutout victory. Southern Maine sophomore Cameron Atherton (New Milford, Conn.) made four saves in the loss.
NEXT GAME:
The Huskies are back in action on Saturday. Southern Maine travels to Western Connecticut (12:00 pm) for its first Little East Conference game of 2019.
