Box Score Huskies Host Bowdoin College on Tuesday (7 p.m.)
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Sophie McGovern (Hermantown, Minn.) had a goal and three assists, and sophomore goalie Alexa Berg (West Fargo, N.D.) stopped 13 shots, as the third-ranked Norwich University Cadets shut out the University of Southern Maine Huskies 5-0 in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women 's action Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The win was the 10th straight for the Cadets since a season-opening loss on the road to top-ranked Plattsburgh. The Cadets improved to 10-1-0 overall and are undefeated in seven NEHC games. The Huskies dropped their third straight game to fall to 3-7-0 overall and 3-4-0 in conference games.
McGovern gave the visitors an early jolt scoring 19 seconds into the game, and setting up sophomore Samantha Benoit (Bow, N.H.) for a power-play marker at 1:55. The Huskies settled down to keep the Cadets off the board for the remaining 18 minutes and escaped the period down only 2-0.
Rookie Julia Masotta (Tewksbury, Mass.) made it 3-0 at 6:39 of the second period as Benoit and senior Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass.) set her up. Conway scored her 10th of the season, the 93rd of her career, tapping home a feed from McGovern at 11:27. With the goal, Conway became the Cadets' all-time leading goal scorer moving ahead of Julie Fortier '12.
Senior Alyssa Hulst (Scarborough, Maine) had the lone goal of the third period for the Cadets. Hulst , Conway, and Benoit each finished the game with a goal and an assist.
Berg picked up her third shutout of the season as the Cadets blanked their opponents for the seventh time in 11 games. The second-year goaltender was tested for a right pad save in the second period on a hard shot from senior Katie Nolan (Dorchester, Mass.), and got a piece of tip attempt by rookie Peyton Dukas (Fairfield, Vt.) in the third.
USM senior Whitney Padgett (Eden Prairie, Minn.) finished with 34 saves.
Southern Maine returns to the ice on Tuesday (7 p.m.) for a non-conference game against Bowdoin College. Norwich is off until January 5-6 when it hosts the East/West Showcase. NU will play Plattsburgh in the opening round.
