BANGOR, Maine – Sydney Allen scored 19 points to lead the Husson University Eagles to a 67-49 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's basketball game Tuesday night at Newman Gymansium.
Allen was one of two players to score in double figures for Husson which improves to 4-4 with the win. Southern Maine dips to 5-6 with the loss.
Southern Maine suffered offensively struggling to put the ball in the hoop connecting on 15-of-59 field goals (25.4 percent) for the game. The Huskies were also outrebounded 50-29 in the game, yielding 16 offensive boards to the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In a slow start to the scoring, the game was knotted up at 4-4 with 6;47 to play after a layup from USM senior Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.). It was the last points of the quarter for the Huskies, who connected on just two field goals in the first.
- The shooting struggles continued for USM in the second quarter, shooting just 20.0 percent from the field to trail Husson 37-15 at the half. Allen had 12 of her 19 points in the second quarter to lead the Eagles, who shot 9-for-14 from the field (64.3 percent) in the second.
- Both teams scored 10 points each in the third and USM remained behind the Eagles 47-35 headed into the fourth.
- Southern Maine made a run in the fourth, scoring the first seven points of the frame. Sophomore Victoria Harris (Altus, Okla./Lewiston) had four of her team-high 16 points in the opening run, while Luckhardt had a traditional three-point play for a 47-29 deficit with 9:20 to play
- Finding some offensive success, Southern Maine pulled to within nine of the Eagles after trailing by as many as 24 points in the game. USM's Harris made it a 59-48 game with 1:41 to play on a traditional three-point play, but it was too little too late as the Eagles converted from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Allen was 6-for-9 from the field, 3-for-5 from three-point range, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line for her 19 points. Sami Ireland had a double-double for the Eagles with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Joan Overman and Emma Alley each scored nine as Husson finished the game shooting 41.7 percent (25-for-60) from the field.
- Harris had 16 points, including a 10-for-11 mark from the free throw line to lead USM. Junior Abi Ramirez finished with nine points, four rebound and four steals, while Luckhardt had eight points.
- USM was 18-for-25 from the free throw line (72.0 percent). The Huskies forced the Eagles into 22 turnovers, but Husson scored 15 points off of USM's 14 turnovers. Comparatively, USM turned Husson's 22 turnovers into 14 points.
